REPORT RECOMMENDATION
That the Local Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee recommend that Planning and Environment Committee recommend to Council that heritage plaques be installed in 2007 on eight designated heritage buildings and in one Heritage Conservation District as listed in Document 1.
RECOMMANDATION DU
RAPPORT
The LACAC unanimously approved
the report recommendation at its meeting of 9 Nov 06.
BACKGROUND
The
Heritage Plaque Program is carried out in accordance with Section 2.5.5, 15 of
the Official Plan, which contains policies regarding heritage plaques:
"...
the City will support its objective to conserve heritage resources and to
promote the stewardship of those resources by:
b. Commemorating cultural heritage
resources with heritage plaques, awards and other forms of
interpretation;".
The design of the heritage plaque was approved by City Council on September 8, 2004. A presentation will be made to the owners of properties receiving heritage designation plaques on Heritage Day, February 19, 2007.
The commemoration of eight buildings and one heritage conservation district designated under the Ontario Heritage Act will fulfill the above policies.
CONSULTATION
In
2003, staff wrote to each owner of property designated under Part IV of the
Ontario Heritage Act within the City in order to identify which property owners
wanted a plaque. A list of these owners was compiled and put in order to
determine which designated properties would receive plaques in future years.
The owners of the properties listed in Document 1 were contacted by letter or approached the City individually during the summer of 2006 and have confirmed they would like to receive a plaque in 2007.
FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS
The total plaque cost is approximately $10,000 and will be funded within the 2007 Operating Budget of the Planning and Growth Management Department, Planning and Infrastructure Approvals Branch, subject to Council's approval of the 2007 Operating budget.
