BACKGROUND

 

Pursuant to Section 284 of the Municipal Act, 2001 submitted herewith is a Statement of Remuneration, Benefits and Expenses paid to Members of Council and Council Appointees in 2006.

 

Remuneration for Members of Council is fully taxable.  The one-third tax-free portion of Council members' salaries was eliminated effective 1 January 2005 as per the resolution approved by Council at their meeting of 24 November 2004.  Benefits include long-term disability, life insurance, extended health care, dental care and OMERS. Other remuneration includes Police Service Board, Association of Municipalities of Ontario and Rideau Valley Conservation Authority honorarium/remuneration.

 

Expenses paid to Members of Council and Council appointees include only amounts paid directly to them for reimbursements of out-of-pocket expenses; such as travel, hospitality and office supply reimbursements. They do not include those expenses incurred by Members and Appointees that are paid to outside vendors. Expenses reported for Members of Council are not all-inclusive of Council Salary / Office Budget expenses.

 

Expenses paid to Members of Council include expenses paid by the City of Ottawa, and by any authorities, boards, and associations that the Member serves on through Council appointment. Authorities, boards and associations include the Police Service Board, the Association of Municipalities of Ontario, the South Nation Conservation Authority, the Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority and the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority.
