BACKGROUND

On 11 July 2007, the Ottawa Library Board received the Ottawa Public Library Annual Report – 2006, attached as Document 1.

2006 was the 100^th anniversary of the Ottawa Public Library. As part of their Centennial year, the Library had many accomplishments, which are highlighted in the 2006 Annual Report. Some of those accomplishments include the following:

Opened the first new library since amalgamation – Greenboro District Library, the library of the future

Launched a new web site (which now receives almost a half million visits a month)

Hosted 1600 delegates and vendors from across Canada at the annual Canadian Library Association (CLA) conference
Through a partnership between the library and Ottawa Community Immigrant Services Organization, implemented the Multicultural Liaison Officer Program in nine OPL branches.
Implemented downloadable audio books service via the Internet
Implemented a partnership with the Canadian Council for the Blind to establish a bookclub for blind readers
Developed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the OPL and the Friends of the Ottawa Public Library Association (FOPLA) formalizing the relationship between the 2 organizations
Implemented new self-serve technology at the Ruth E. Dickinson branch
Hosted the crew of the Space Shuttle Atlantis crew (including Ottawa astronaut Steve MacLean) who honoured the winners of the national “Launch Your Future with Reading” contest. And supported the Library’s Every Kid a Card Campaign
Circulated almost 10 million items; received almost 5 million visits; answered more than a quarter million information questions and welcomed almost 190 thousand citizens to more than 8300 events and programs.
