That the Corporate Services and Economic
Development Committee recommend Council endorse Councillor Peter Hume to stand
for election as AMO President.
Que le Comité des services organisationnels et
du développement économique recommande au Conseil d’appuyer la candidature du
conseiller Peter Hume à la présidence de l’AMO.
The annual conference of the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) is being held in Ottawa
on August 24-27, 2008. Councillor Peter
Hume has expressed an interest in standing for election as President of the
Association. He is presently a member
of the Board of Directors, the Chair of the Regional and Single Tier Caucus,
and serves on the AMO
Provincial-Municipal Fiscal Service Delivery Review Panel.
The City of
Ottawa is the largest member of AMO.
AMO’s Board of Directors is comprised of
49 elected and non-elected officials from all regions and sizes of communities
to form a broad base of support and provide the diverse input required to carry
the municipal message to the provincial and federal governments. The AMO Board of Directors meets five times
per year. The President may have some additional meetings, depending on what
other initiatives s/he is charged with by the Board.
Public consultation was not required.
The Board of Directors generally meets five times per year in Toronto, although an additional one to five trips may arise with respect to Directors participating on Board sub-committees, working groups, etc.
The estimated cost per trip is $720, for a total estimated cost of $3,600 to $7,200, depending on the number of trips. This cost is partially reimbursed by AMO, reducing the City’s estimated expense to $2,000 to $4,200. Funds are available within the 2008 Elected Officials Administrative Budget.

Upon Council approval, City Council’s endorsement of Councillor Peter Hume’s nomination for the office of President will be forwarded to AMO.
