Report recommendation:

That the Ottawa Built Heritage Advisory Committee recommend that Planning Committee recommend that Council approve the designation of 175 Main Street, under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act according to Statement of Cultural Heritage Value included as Document 4.

Sally Coutts, Heritage Planner, provided an overview of the report.  She provided committee a revised Statement of Cultural Heritage Value (document 4) and asked committee to amend the report recommendation accordingly.

Lloyd Phillips, Lloyd Phillips and Associates Ltd., was present as a representative of the Oblate Fathers and St. Paul University, in support of the proposed designation.  Mr. Phillips noted they had worked closely with staff and the community on this plan.  He was confident that the proposed designation, the pending Community Design Plan and zoning bylaws would protect the surrounding area from inappropriate development.

David Jeanes, Heritage Ottawa expressed strong support for the designation.  He showed historic images of the building noting its importance as a landmark in Old Ottawa East from the beginning.  He also touched briefly on the building’s original designer, Albert Mesnard.

Moved by Alice Fyfe:

That the Ottawa Built Heritage Advisory Committee recommend that Planning Committee recommend that Council approve the designation of 175 Main Street, under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act according to revised Statement of Cultural Heritage Value included as Document 4.
