Designation of the deschâtelets building and
ASSOCIaTED landscape, 175 main street, under part iv of the ontario heritage act

Report recommendation:
That the Ottawa
Built Heritage Advisory Committee recommend that Planning Committee recommend
that Council approve the designation of 175 Main Street, under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act according to
Statement of Cultural Heritage Value included as Document 4.
Sally Coutts, Heritage Planner,
provided an overview of the report. She
provided committee a revised Statement of Cultural Heritage Value (document 4)
and asked committee to amend the report recommendation accordingly.
Lloyd Phillips, Lloyd Phillips
and Associates Ltd.,
was present as a representative of the Oblate Fathers and St. Paul University,
in support of the proposed designation.
Mr. Phillips noted they had worked closely with staff and the community
on this plan. He was confident that the
proposed designation, the pending Community Design Plan and zoning bylaws would
protect the surrounding area from inappropriate development.
David
Jeanes, Heritage Ottawa
expressed strong support for the designation.
He showed historic images of the building noting its importance as a
landmark in Old Ottawa East from the beginning.
He also touched briefly on the building’s original designer, Albert
Mesnard.
