Walkley Road Bridge over the Southeast Transitway – Overview

Project Description

The Walkley Road overpass Southeast Transitway Bridge carries Walkley Road over both the Southeast Transitway and the Sawmill Creek Multi-use Pathway.  The bridge was constructed in 1972 and the Southeast Transitway beneath the structure and the platforms between the bridge and transit towers were constructed in 1993. 

This project started in summer 2015. The previous contractor finished approximately 50 percent of the project. A new contractor will start in late June 2016 to complete the balance of the project, which includes the replacement of platforms between the bridge and transit towers  on the south side of Walkley Road, installation of the concrete columns under the new platforms,repairs to the deteriorated concrete in sidewalks, medians, deck soffit and abutment walls, and repairs to the Walkley Sawmill Creek culvert liner.

Construction notice – June 2016

Beginning late June 2016, the City of Ottawa will begin construction work in your neighbourhood.  This work is being conducted to rehabilitate the Walkley Road Bridge over Southeast Transitway.

Who: Lischer Construction Inc. will be performing the work for the City of Ottawa.

Why: The City of Ottawa will be proceeding with this construction to rehabilitate the Walkley Road Bridge over Southeast Transitway.

Where: The construction will take place at the Walkley Road Bridge over Southeast Transitway.

What: Work will involve the rehabilitation of the Walkley Road bridge over Southeast Transitway, replacement of the access link slab to transitway towers on the south side of Walkley Road, installation of the new concrete columns under the new access link slabs, and rehabilitation of Walkley Road bridge deck.

When: The work is planned to begin in late June 2016 and finish by the end of October 2016.

The City of Ottawa Noise By-law (2004-253) allows construction activity to occur weekdays between 7am and 10pm.  Night work is expected.  Advance notice of night work will be provided to the community by updates on the City website and by Notice to those adjacent to the work.   

Accessibility

Accessibility is an important consideration for the City of Ottawa. The City makes every effort to provide access through and around construction sites. If you require special accommodation, please contact the Contractor’s Representative or the City’s Project Manager noted below.

Impact on vehicle traffic and pedestrains

For Walkley Road, there will be some lane closures during the construction of bridge deck rehabilitation. At least one eastbound and one westbound lane will be maintained at all times. For Southeast Transitway, Short duration closures will be required in order to permit repairs to the bridge desk soffit and construction of new concrete columns. At least one northbound and one southbound lane will be maintained at all times. Pedestrian access on Walkley Road and the Southeast Transitway level will be maintained. The two transit towers on the south side of Walkley Road will be closed during the construction.

Construction disruptions

Lischer Construction Inc. is assuming full responsibility for the construction work until it is entirely completed in 2016. They will take every precaution to minimize interruptions to the everyday life of your family and/or operation of your business, but as you can appreciate, there may be some inconvenience during the course of the operation of the work, such as increased traffic, noise, dust and vibration.  We would like to thank you for your patience and co-operation.

You may feel vibrations at your home or business due to the use of the heavy equipment needed to complete this work.  This is quite common and not usually a problem.

Night-time Work Notice - July 2015

Please be advised that construction on the Walkley Road Bridge over the southeast (SE) Transitway is proceeding well. As part of the construction project, night-time work is required to safely repair the bridge structure. 

Who: The City of Ottawa has hired the Contractor,Dalcon Enterprises Inc., to perform the work. 

Why: This work will occur at night so that the roadway can remain open to traffic during daytime hours. This will significantlyreduce impacts to pedestrians, cyclists and vehicular traffic traveling through the area. 

What: Night work will include bridge jacking operations, construction of access link slabs, and repairs to the bridge soffit. Noise will be created as part of this construction but it is not expected to create significant disruptions. 

Dalcon Enterprises Inc. will keep the noise level to a minimum but you may experience some inconvenience due to the night work. 

When: Night work will take place intermittently between July and October 2015. 

Where: The work will be implemented on the Walkley Road bridge and SE Transitway under the bridge.
