Commissioner of Oaths

Commissioner-of-Oaths' services are offered through the City's Client Service Centres and include affidavits, oaths and statutory declarations. Since the services vary, it is strongly recommended that you contact the City in advance of your visit to confirm that your document can be commissioned by the City.

The City does not have a Notary Public and cannot notarize documents or certify true copies. A list of Notary Publics and lawyers who notarize documents can be found in your local phone directory.

Once you are certain the City can commission your document, you must visit a Client Service Centre in person. The request for the Commissioner-of-Oaths service must be made by the same individual who will be taking the oath and signing the document. You must present one original piece of photo identification (no copies permitted) in the form of government-issued photo identification: a valid driver's licence, a valid passport or a BYID age-of-majority card. If your identification is in a language other than English or French, an official translation of the document may be required. Please call Client Service Centre staff at 3-1-1 for further details. The City of Ottawa does not accept health cards as a form of photo identification.

The City of Ottawa charges $40 for each document to be sworn. This fee is payable by cash, cheque, debit, Visa or MasterCard.
