Thank you to our operators

The 2012-2013 Outdoor Rink season was a roaring success – but it wasn't easy! Despite heavy snow falls, freezing rain, and a couple of tropical warm spells Ottawa's outdoor rink community was able to maximize their time on the ice this season thanks to the rink operators who ensured Ottawa's 248 outdoor ice surfaces were shovelled, scraped, and flooded whenever the weather was kind enough to cooperate. Faced with temperatures that dropped into the -30s, howling storms with 65km winds, and a relentless sun that burned brighter with each passing day, these masters of the ice persevered. Ottawa's rinks hosted over forty eight community carnivals where residents gathered to skate, enjoy hot chocolate, ride on horse drawn carriages, and even participate in a curling bonspiel! Ottawa's Community Outdoor Rink program is a model of success thanks to the efforts of every skater that helped scrape the ice, every volunteer that selflessly donated their time, and a City Council that recognizes the importance of winter recreation to its constituents.
