Archives

Background

The Central Archives preserves original documents on the history and development of Ottawa. You can find photos, maps, architectural drawings and other artifacts.

The Archives has two main types of records:

Civic government records

These records include the twelve former municipalities; the Ottawa Public Library; Police, Fire, and Emergency Services; and OC Transpo; original by-laws, original minutes of Council and Committees of Council and historical maps, photographs and plans from major structures.

Community records

Some examples include the Billings, Lett and Ogilvy family papers, records from the United Church of Canada, the Royal Ottawa Sanatorium (now the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre), the Historical Society of Ottawa, and the Central Canada Exhibition Association.

Donations and Gifts

Please donate records or photographs to the Archives and receive a tax receipt. For more information, contact Serge Barbe, Archivist, 613-580-2424, ext. 13683.

Exhibitions & Workshops

The Archives hosts annual exhibitions and workshops. Our virtual exhibitions meet Ontario school curriculum guidelines and teachers can find learning resources and educational guides. Contact the Central Archives' reference desk at 613-580-2857 or archives@ottawa.ca.
