Grades 4 to 8

 This kit is a tool to help teach students the importance of healthy nutrition and understanding serving sizes recommended by the Canadian Food Guide.  Can be used in combination with other nutrition resources.

Healthy Breakfast Toolkit

Grades 1 to 6

This toolkit contains various breakfast food models and food packages. The toolkit also includes a lesson plan on healthy breakfasts as well as suggested activities intended to teach students about creating healthy, balanced breakfasts and how to read breakfast food labels. Activities vary depending on the grade level and are complete with activity sheets.

This display must be accompanied by A Public Health Nurse.

Healthy Lunch Toolkit

Grades 1 to 6

This toolkit contains various food models for students to create a healthy lunch and identify recommended portion sizes. This toolkit includes a lesson plan on healthy lunches as well as suggested activities intended to teach students about creating healthy, balanced lunches. Activities vary depending on the grade level and are complete with activity sheets.

This display must be accompanied by A Public Health Nurse.

Grades 5 to 8

This bin consists of kitchen equipment such as dishes, utensils and sets of pots and pans. It also comes with a teacher’s manual which includes six lesson plans, recipes, and factsheets for students.  Schools need to purchase ingredients with their own budget.

This activity can be borrowed to use in your school for a 6 weeks period.

Nutristep

Preschoolers to 5 years old

Nutrition Screening Tool for Every Toddler is a resource that helps to assess eating habits and identify nutrition problems early in children aged three to five years. It involves the use of a valid and reliable 17-question nutrition risk screening index that parents can complete about their preschooler. Attempts are made to connect parents who need more support with services in their community.

This assessment can be done by your school’s Public Health Nurse during kindergarten orientation events.

Sugar Shocker Kit

Kindergarten to grade 12

This display exposes the nutritional and sugar content of popular beverages. Fruit drinks, iced tea, energy drinks, iced coffee, sports drinks, vitamin added water, 100% orange juice, chocolate milk, white milk and water are featured.  Packets of sugar illustrate the quantity of sugar in each beverage. ‘Sugar Shocker’ factsheet is available.

Active Living

Body Ball

Grades 4 to 12

Body Ball is an activity used to promote physical activity. Participants wear velcro vests and throw balls at each other, in order to have the balls stick to the vests. Each kit includes 4 vests and 4 balls.

Dance Dance Revolution

Grades 7 to 12           

Dance Dance Revolution is an interactive video game where participants dance on a mat and follow the steps shown on the screen. The goal is to promote physical activity in a creative way. There are different playing options such as solo play, team play, and competitive play. Dance, Dance Revolution can have up to 2 players at a time.

A Public Health Nurse must accompany this resource.

Omnikin Ball

Grades 4 to 12

This unique game promotes physical activity and teamwork. It can be played indoors or outdoors. It is a great way to encourage teambuilding within your school or to set-up at a lunch hour to promote physical activity. It can accommodate a large group.

Pause to Play – Reduce Screen Time

For parents and caregivers of children and youth.

This display consists of two banners and a Plinko game which can be booked together or individually to teach adults about sedentary behaviour, screen time and physical activity.

Pedometers

Grades 2 to 12

Pedometers can be incorporated into classroom activities such as capturing steps to walk across Canada or as a way of introducing a walking club at a school. Each kit comes with 25 pedometers and a bilingual activity booklet.

Pedometer kits can be borrowed to use in your school for a 3 week period. Schools must complete a lending form and be responsible for lost or damaged pedometers.

Physical Activity Dice Game

All grades

Kids love these super-sized, soft activity dice. One die is labelled with numbers, the other with simple activities like touch your toes, or do a push up. The children throw both dice in the air and complete the number and type of activity dictated by the dice.

Phyz Mascot

For kindergarten to Grade 12 school events

Phyz is the physical activity mascot.  He comes with a green Active Ottawa Actif t-shirt and a blue Ottawa Public Health vest.  Optional gear includes a black helmet and skates.

Speed Stackers

Grades 4 to 12

Speed Stackers can be used as a fun activity to help students develop hand-eye coordination as well as brain development, sequencing and patterning. Students stack and un-stack 12 specially designed cups in predetermined sequences.  Stackers can also be used in a health fair setting to attract youth to your booth.

Grades 1 to 12

This 4-way Tug-o-war is an effective team builder. Being physically active and developing communication skills by working as a team to develop a strategy is the ultimate goal of this game. It can accommodate a large or small group.

Playground Activity Leaders in Schools (PALS)

Grades 4 to 6

Playground Activity Leaders in Schools (PALS) is a leadership program that encourages all children to be active at recess. The aim of the program is to:

• Decrease conflict and reduce playground bullying;

• Increase physical activity;

• Offer senior students the opportunity to gain valuable communication, leadership and conflict resolution skills as games leaders.

Students in grades four to six with leadership qualities are trained by a Public Health Nurse to be Playground Activity Leaders in their schools.  The leaders plan and lead fun and safe activities, and mediate conflicts, during recess for younger students in their school.  School staff over-sees the program and in some schools parents help, with ongoing support provided by the Public Health Nurse.

Grades 7 to 12

 It is an interactive display that addresses ways that youth can deal with stress.  The display consists of 11 photos and accompanying tips on how youth can deal in a healthy way with the stressors in their lives.

Growth & Development and Sexuality

Changing Me Banners

Grades 4 to 6

Activity kit including two banners (1 for the girl and 1 for the boy) with corresponding anatomical body parts identifying the physical changes occurring at puberty in both genders, as well as a lesson plan addressing the changes at puberty.

Grades 7 to 12

This display is ideal for a health fair setting as an interactive, educational tool when teaching students about sexual health. Students place one disk on a pegboard (starting at the top), where it eventually falls into one of the four categories at the bottom. A PHN then asks them a question corresponding to the category that was selected. Although only 4 categories can be displayed at a time on the peg board, there are 6 categories included with each game that are interchangeable.

Sexuality Wheel

Grades 7 to 12

This display is ideal for a health fair setting as an interactive, educational tool when teaching students about sexual health. Students spin the wheel, land on a category and a PHN asks them a question corresponding to the chosen category. There is an option to hide categories on the wheel with a blank pie piece that is directly behind the category piece, if the category is not appropriate for the setting where the wheel is being used.

Drowning Prevention Resource Bin

Grades 2 to 8

This Drowning Prevention Resource Bin contains resources and information about the key teaching points to provide water safety and drowning prevention education.  It includes samples of Personal Floatation Devices (PFDs), pool toys (water wings, pool noodles), curriculum based lesson plans and sample activities.

Gear-up to Move kit

Grades 4 to 6

 The Gear Up to Move bin is used to educate students on helmet safety and head injury prevention. The bin contains a teaching manual with various lesson plans and activities, a bicycle helmet and mannequin head for a helmet fitting demonstration, photos of different types of helmets, photos of the brain lobes, an egg helmet, a gelatine brain mould, a trivia game (both a hard copy and electronic), and a DVD.

This bin can be borrowed to use in your school.

This display informs individuals about the importance of wearing a helmet in bicycling and other popular recreational activities. Comes with helmets or display and a helmet safety video (English and French).

 The Wear-the-Gear bin is designed to teach about head injury prevention among youth. The bin includes a facilitator manual with 6 detailed activities, a Jell-O brain mould, a mini egg-helmet, 4 helmets (bicycle helmet, ski/snowboard helmet, hockey helmet and skateboard), the “Who Needs a Motor?” DVD, the Step by Step Active Transportation Handbook, illustrations of a healthy and injured cross section of the brain and samples of the “Wear the Gear!” and “Buckle your Bucket” posters.

The Sun Floor Mat Game

Kindergarten to grade 8

A fun, kinestetic floor game to reinforce UV and Sun Safety messages. The object of the game is to be the first student or team to arrive at the beach, having correctly answered the sun safety questions and then having collected all the items needed  to be protected from the sun and heat  Items include an umbrella, wide-brim hat, T-shirt, sunglasses, sunscreen and water.

A Public Health Nurse must accompany this activity.

Kindergarten to grade 8

  This Sun Safety Kit contains samples of sun safe clothing etc: tops, pants, hats, sunscreen, lip balm, sunglasses, artificial tanning lotions and an umbrella. The kit also includes factsheets and activity guides.

Tobacco and Substance Misuse Prevention

Fatal Vision Goggles

Grade 7 and up

The Fatal Vision goggles simulate the effects of alcohol and can be used as an educational activity when teaching students about the negative effects of alcohol on the body and mind.  A basketball net or Mr. Potato Head can be used along with the goggles to reinforce the negative effects of alcohol on one’s balance, coordination and reaction time.

A Public Health Nurse must accompany this display. Fatal Vision Goggles, Mr. Potato Head and Basketball net must be booked separately.

Grade 7 & up

 Interactive quiz game where participants compete against one another to answer questions related to tobacco and smoking.  Bilingual question and answer cards included.

Pigs Lungs

Grades 4 & up

 The inflatable pig’s lungs provide an excellent opportunity to teach students about the deadly effects of smoking.  The display includes one healthy lung, a dried cross-section of a lung, a jar of “tar” and one diseased lung, which simulates the effects of smoking a pack of cigarettes a day for 20 years.

 This activity focuses on driving safety as it relates to impaired and distracted driving. It simulates driving while safely introducing a feeling of impairment (visual impairment goggles) or distraction (text messaging). Please see instructions for weight restrictions

 This interactive display shows some of the chemicals found in household items that are also present in cigarettes. The health effects of inhaling or ingesting these chemicals is discussed. An interesting story goes along with each chemical, making it easier for the students to relate to the chemical in their own life.

Why Drive High Display

Grades 9 to 12

This game simulates the impairment of hand eye coordination that would occur with marijuana use. The key message is that marijuana impairs your ability to drive safely. Maneuver the sober car from the “home” location to the “party” location along the first wire trying not to let the ring touch the wire. You will be asked to do the same back from the “party” location to “home” with the impaired car. A siren will sound if the car ring touches the wire, indicating a crash.

Dental Health

Dental Health Resource Bin

Kindergarten to grade 4

Contains videos, books, posters, teaching models, as well as the Dental Health Education Module that includes lesson plans, activity sheets, background information and an evaluation section. Note: The Dental Health Education Module can be borrowed separately from the Dental Health Bin.

This user-friendly resource allows you to read the lesson plan, refer to the background section for additional information, photocopy the recommended activity sheets, utilize the models to teach students and assess student understanding. The Module also contains information to send home to parents to help promote dental health at home.

 This is an interactive display, which promotes discussion around the principals of healthy hand hygiene. Participants roll the colour-coded dice and the colour they roll will correspond to one of the 5 titles. They are then required to answer a question from that category.
