Lemieux Island Water Purification Plant
Filter Expansion Project
Notice of Study Commencement
Planning studies completed by the City of Ottawa indicate that that the demand for water supply within the city will be nearing the existing capacity within the next four years.
As one of two main water plants for the city, the Lemieux Island Water Purification Plant has been the subject of several expansion studies since 1985. Drawing from these studies, the main objective of this project is to examine alternatives to increase the capacity of Ottawa's available water supply. To accommodate this increase, anticipated modifications to the facility at Lemieux Island include upgrades to the low lift pumping station, twinning of the raw water transmission main, the addition of six new filters, and a new electrical substation.
The Lemieux Island Filter Expansion project is categorized as a Schedule C project under the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (Class EA), and as such must meet the requirements of Phases 1 through 4 of the planning and design process of the Class EA, before proceeding to design and construction. The study will address alternative solutions (e.g. reduce water demand, limit growth) and design concepts (e.g. construct new filters, membranes), and include an Environmental Study Report.
