The City's services related to animal care and control help ensure that citizens with and without pets may enjoy municipal amenities and a high standard of quality of life. The City also advocates and promotes responsible pet care and ownership in part through collaboration with animal care organizations such as the Ottawa Humane Society and the Wild Bird Care Centre. Those non-profit volunteer organizations provide for care and emergency services for pets and wild birds. Remember also that spaying or neutering your pet is important to its health and helps to control the population of pets in need of care and shelter. Enactment of the new Animal Care and Control By-lawIn March 2003, City Council approved the new Animal Care and Control By-law for the City of Ottawa, following extensive public consultation and review by City staff and Council. The new by-law will help ensure public health and safety while promoting appropriate care for animals. Among other benefits, it will help reduce the costs associated with sheltering strays by increasing the number of lost animals that are returned to their owner rather than being impounded. The new Animal Care and Control By-law has been in effect since April 1, 2003. The By-law Services Branch responds to and investigates service requests related to all animal related by-laws.
