Seven new poems in English and five new poems in French were chosen for the 2006 edition. Why place poetry on public transit?Poems on public transit have several benefits. Not only do transit riders have poems to read to make their ride more enjoyable, Transpoetry highlights the creativity of local authors at the same time. Who is responsible for Transpoetry?Transpoetry is a partnership between the City of Ottawa’s Cultural Services and Community Funding branch and a steering committee of partners from all levels in the arts and business community. Transpoetry 2006 partners are: OC Transpo; Canada Council for the Arts; two local literary organizations—Arc, Canada’s Poetry Magazine and L’Association des auteures et auteurs de l’Ontario français; and corporate partner Pattison Outdoor Advertising. How were the Transpoetry poems chosen?A call for poems was publicized in August 2005. An overwhelming 600 poems were submitted for consideration. The poems were selected through a “blind jury process”. Only after the poems had been agreed upon and chosen, were the names of the poets revealed to the jurors. How can I submit a poem for Transpoetry?We are currently not accepting poetry submissions for Transpoetry. A call for submissions will be published when new poems are chosen in the future. Are there poems on buses in other cities?Yes. The Canada Council for the Arts funds poetry on public transit programs across Canada. Poetry in Transit can be seen in other Canadian cities such as Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Halifax, St. John’s and Trois Rivières. |
