National Tree Planting Challenge
On May 8, 2007, the City of Ottawa issued a national challenge, challenging Canadian municipalities to join Ottawa in planting trees for the planet. Ottawa has committed to planting 100,000 trees between 2007 and 2010, and has registered this pledge with United Nations Environment Programme’s (UNEP) Plant for the Planet: Billion Tree Campaign, a major worldwide tree planting campaign with the objective of planting at least one billion trees worldwide. The first of the 100,000 trees – the Ottawa tree – was planted at Ottawa City Hall. This tree represents the inauguration of the TREE Program, as well as issuing a national challenge to other Canadian municipalities to join Ottawa in this tree planting effort. The banding together of municipalities for a planting challenge has the prospect of building strong public awareness of the issues and options of local governments in their struggle to maintain the environmental integrity of our communities and their urban forest cover. As a Canadian municipality, we encourage you to join the City of Ottawa’s National Tree Planting Challenge. Please contact TREE@ottawa.ca or call 613-580-2424, ext. 1TREE (18733) to receive a City of Ottawa Participation Pledge Card so we can COUNT YOU IN! As a Canadian resident, you can take local action for a global cause by registering your own tree planting initiatives with the UNEP’s Plant for the Planet: Billion Tree Campaign.
