Domiciliary Hostels in Ottawa

Domiciliary hostels provide supportive housing to vulnerable adults who need personal support and some assistance with daily living activities. They are an important part of a broad continuum of housing and support services for people who are vulnerable, homeless or at risk of homelessness in Ottawa.

What Are Domiciliary Hostels?

Domiciliary hostels are privately owned or non-profit residences that assist vulnerable adults to live in a supportive community environment. Residents are typically living with psychiatric or developmental impairments and/or are elderly. Domiciliary hostels offer a residential living environment that is safe and supportive for all tenants. Basic services include 24-hour staffing with support; meals and snacks; medication management; furnished rooms (most are shared accommodation); assistance with daily living activities; housekeeping and laundry services. They also provide access to other on-site and community based services.

The City of Ottawa provides subsidies for eligible residents of domiciliary hostels. A financial and personal suitability assessment is conducted to determine eligibility. Subsidized residents contribute to their stay and retain a small personal needs benefit. For information about qualifying for a domiciliary hostel subsidy and/or to make a referral, please contact City of Ottawa domiciliary hostel intake services at 613-560-0622, ext. 26586. All subsidized placements are arranged through the City.

In March 2006, City Council approved the Domiciliary Hostel Standards, which define the City's expectations, ensuring that purchased services are provided in an atmosphere of dignity and respect for all residents.
