The operation of traffic signals has a major impact on stops, delays and travel times for various users of the transportation system. The application of state-of-the-art technology and in-house software development has resulted in a customized, central, traffic-control system and traffic-control equipment tailored specifically to the City’s needs. This improves safety, efficiency and reliability at more than 1040 signalized intersections located within the City of Ottawa. Mitigating the effects of congestion and the increasing demands on the transportation system helps to reduce fuel consumption and the negative impacts to air quality. The traffic control system is continuously monitored, with real-time adjustments implemented in response to peak hour congestion, weather conditions, special events and construction. Signal timings are continuously monitored and updated to reflect changing traffic patterns and volumes.
