New wetlands identified by provincial government

The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) have identified new Provincially-Significant Wetlands, within the City of Ottawa. This updated mapping adds 3,600 hectares (9,000 acres) of new Provincially-Significant Wetlands, and removes 775 hectares (1,900 acres) that were previously designated.

Provincial policy requires the City of Ottawa add these new wetlands to the Official Plan in 2009 as part of the ongoing Official Plan Review.

For many property owners, the wetland designations will have little or no effect on how the land is used. For other property owners, the impact may include a reduction of development potential and additional regulations for some activities.

As the MNR has not directly informed property owners of the updated mapping, the City has mailed an information package to all property owners affected by the wetlands mapping.
