King Edward Avenue Lane Reduction Study

The City of Ottawa is initiating the King Edward Avenue Lane Reduction Study to determine the potential transportation and community impacts of reducing the number of lanes on King Edward Avenue from six lanes to four lanes between Rideau Street and Sussex Drive. City staff have worked with members of the King Edward Avenue Task Force and Dillon Consulting Limited to carry out a comparative analysis of three alternative scenarios:

  • Scenario 1: Six-lane configuration (the ‘status-quo’)
  • Scenario 2: Five-lane configuration
  • Scenario 3: Four-lane configuration.

Transportation System Impact Assessment

The transportation system impact analysis will combine both an empirical component and a more qualitatively based analysis of the impact of the lane reduction on:

  • Motorists
  • Pedestrians and Cyclists
  • Transit
  • Goods Movement
  • Impact on Other Communities
  • Safety

Community Impact Assessment

The community impact assessment is intended to be broad, but limited to measurable impacts of the road corridor and operations on the local and regional community. The impact assessment should consider the natural and socio-economic environment, and may include the following indicators:

  • Air quality
  • Noise
  • Economic prosperity
  • Urban Design/ Streetscape
  • Neighbourhood cohesion and connectivity
  • Safety

The results of the study will be presented to Transportation Committee in May 2010. Recommendations will be based on study results as well as the feedback received from stakeholders during the Open House.
