Open House No. 1 Display Boards – April 2010

Welcome

The City of Ottawa welcomes you to the first of two Public Open Houses for the Old Ottawa South Area Traffic Management (ATM) Study.

The study will examine alternative solutions to address traffic related concerns expressed by local residents within the Old Ottawa South Community and develop a comprehensive ATM plan for the community.

The purpose of this Public Open House is to:

  • Introduce the project and study team.
  • Seek input with respect to traffic issues from the perspective of pedestrians, cyclists, transit users, motorists, as well as area residents and businesses.
  • Share study findings as they relate to data collected to date.

Your comments are welcomed and are very important to this study.

Background / Context

  • The Old Ottawa South Community consists of mainly residential, retail business and institutional land uses.
  • Major traffic generators in the area include Hopewell Avenue Public School, Landsdowne Park, Carleton University, the Ottawa South Community Centre and the light rail transit station. There has also been residential densification in recent years.
  • In 1971, Sunnyside Avenue was converted from one-way to two-way traffic operations, which involved road widening.
  • Historically, Old Ottawa South has expressed concerns with a number of traffic issues, particularly relating to through traffic and pedestrian safety.
  • Some community concerns were partly addressed by the 1996 Old Ottawa South Transportation and Parking Study; however traffic concerns have worsened over time.

Study Objectives and Scope

The primary aim of this study is to address issues relating to traffic flow and safety from the perspective of pedestrians, cyclists, transit users, motorists, as well as area residents and businesses.

The study will consider the recommendations made by the Glebe Area Traffic Management Study. In particular, potential impacts within Old Ottawa South associated with restricting right-turns from Bronson Avenue into the Glebe during the morning peak period will be assessed.

Measures aimed at achieving the project objectives will be limited to the primary study area. A broader secondary study area has been identified for the purposes of data collection and assessment of impacts. However, traffic issues will not be addressed through the implementation of measures beyond the primary study area.

Reported Traffic Issues

  • Sunnyside Avenue right-of-way is predominantly used by vehicular traffic, which compromises the road character and the needs of other road users.
  • Through traffic within the community, particularly on Sunnyside Avenue.
  • Aggressive driver behavior and speeding.
  • Sub-standard pedestrian facilities on Sunnyside Avenue, which is a major pedestrian route.
  • Pedestrian safety concerns at the intersection of Sunnyside/ Bank Street, Sunnyside/ Bronson Avenue and Sunnyside/ Seneca Street (partially due to bus stop location close to intersection).
  • Pedestrian safety concerns within the vicinity of Hopewell Avenue School, particularly at the crossing to the school yard on the south side of Hopewell Avenue.
  • Cyclist safety on Sunnyside Avenue and at all Bank Street intersections.
  • Noise and air pollution associated with frequent stop-and-go traffic movement at stop signs and/or bus stops.
  • On-street parking spill-over from events at Carleton University and Lansdowne Park.

Next Steps

Where do we go from here?

A second public open house is anticipated to take place in November of this year. At this public open house, preferred alternative solutions will be presented. We look forward to your attendance and participation at that time.

Thank you for your participation.
