Job Summary

The Shelter Child and Youth Worker is responsible for the development, planning and delivery of age appropriate recreation activities for children and youth residing at the shelter. The worker provides services to children and youth following the shelter's client service model. They ensure the safety and security of children and youth for on-site and off-site activities.

Education & Experience

Post Secondary Student (completion of first year College or university): Human Services Field e.g. Social Services, Recreation, Child and Youth Programming

Minimum of one (1) year but less than two (2) years of related experience is required:

Language, Certificates & Licenses

CPR required.

First Aid - Level C required.

The successful candidate will be required to complete a Police Record Check to the City of Ottawa’s satisfaction.

English oral, reading, writing required.
French oral, reading, writing may be required for some positions.
Candidates must meet language requirement for position upon hire.


Child development stages.

Child and youth behaviour management strategies.

Computer programs e.g. Word, Excel, Outlook

Competencies & Skills

Work well with children and youth from diverse social/economical and cultural/ethnical background

Time management and organization skills

Good communication skills (oral)
