Description

Shield is part of the series entitled The Beautiful Scar. This series is an exploration of the manifestation of scars on the human body. The facial scars made by the ancient Nuba people inspired the imperfect lines and shapes on Tafui’s paintings. Scarring is a natural part of the healing process, as one can only identify a scar once a cut has healed. Tafui’s artistic methods are a fusion of Nordic and Japanese minimalism with the handmade aesthetic of art made by indigenous people. Her colour palette is reminiscent of Ottawa’s snowy winter days, where everything reads as black and white and her colours are highlighted with vibrant hues through the darkness. Tafui is an artist and product designer of high quality, eco-friendly home goods. All of the patterns on her home accessories and goods are based on her original paintings. Tafui’s style is a merge of traditional textile techniques and modern hand painting, giving her work a unique and recognizable look.
