Take it Back! Program

Become a Take it Back! Member

Team up with more than 500 retailers and charitable organizations in Ottawa to safely dispose, recycle or reuse consumer products at the end of their life cycle. You will be helping your community and the environment.

The City's Take it Back! program encourages local businesses to "take back" many of the household materials that they sell, and to ensure they are reused, recycled or disposed of properly. This program provides a convenient and safe way for residents of Ottawa to return household items that should not go in the garbage to participating retailers and charitable organizations.

Since its inception, the Take it Back! program has grown from three automotive products taken back by 16 automotive retailers in 1997, to more than 100 different products taken back by over 500 retailers and charitable organizations in 2017. Each year Take It Back! members divert over 500 tonnes of material from the municipal landfill.

Some of the benefits of being a Take it Back! member include:

  • Increased consumer traffic, as Take it Back! retailers are featured on the City's Waste Explorer
  • In-store promotional material to let everyone know you are a Take it Back! member.
  • City-wide recognition as an environmentally responsible business.

For more information on the Take it Back! program, please contact Christine Collins by email or by phone: 613-580-2424, ext. 22601. Fill out a Registration Form and fax it to 613-560-6028.

Ontario Electronics Stewardship (OES):

Ontario Electronic Stewardship is a not-for-profit organization formed by leading retail, information technology and consumer electronic companies to implement the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Program Plan under the Waste Diversion Act.

The Ontario Electronics Stewardship (OES) website was launched April 1, 2009 to provide information about recovering electronic waste for reuse and recycling. This will compliment Ottawa's current Take it Back! initiative by expanding the number of vendors accepting electronic waste.

Consumers who want to find nearby collection locations for their electronic waste can go to an interactive website,

The Ontario Tire Stewardship (OTS) Program:

The Ontario Tire Stewardship Program is an industry funding organization incorporated under Ontario's Waste Diversion Act to implement and operate the Used Tires Program in the Province of Ontario. The OTS program is for recycling on-road and off-road tires supplied into the Ontario market. The program will divert tires away from landfilling and burning to 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) processing and uses. For more information and to obtain a listing of local OTS collection depots refer to the OTS website at

Municipal Hazardous or Special Waste (MHSW) Program:
