Project overview

Project description

The City of Ottawa is undertaking the construction of new storm and sanitary sewers adjacent to 1460 Riverside Drive. These sewers are necessary in order to decommission the existing sewers that are currently in operation through 1460 Riverside Drive.  

The new storm sewer will flow north along Riverside Drive and then west on Industrial Avenue/Terminal Avenue and the Transitway. The new sanitary sewer will flow north along Riverside Drive and then west on Industrial Avenue/Terminal Avenue, connecting to the existing system on the Transitway.

The project limits are adjacent to 1460 Riverside Drive, as follows:

  • Riverside Drive, from the intersection at Terminal Avenue to 200 metres south of the intersection  
  • Terminal Avenue, from the intersection at Riverside Drive to 150 metres west of the intersection (on Terminal Avenue and then the Transitway)

Project budget

Approved project funds to date are $4 million.

Public engagement

Notices will be delivered to local residents and businesses in advance of construction. Traffic public service announcements and the webpage will be updated to advise of upcoming traffic impacts.

Night work notice (July 2023)

The City of Ottawa will be undertaking night work related to the 1460 Riverside Drive Sewer Relocation project.

What: Night work will involve excavation, sewer installation and reinstatement activities to relocate a storm and sanitary sewer from 1460 Riverside Drive into the City’s right of way.

Why: Night work is required to minimize traffic and transit disruptions.

When: Night work is expected overnight Friday, Saturday, and Sunday on the following weekends:

  • July 28 to July 31, 2023
  • August 18 to August 21, 2023
  • August 25 to August 28, 2023

Please note that this work is weather dependent and additional weekends may be required to complete the work.

Where: The work will be located on Riverside Drive, south of the Terminal Avenue Intersection.

Who: The City of Ottawa has retained Taggart Construction Limited to complete the work.

Lane reductions

Riverside Drive southbound will be reduced to a single lane for the duration of this work. 

Construction disruptions

The contractor will take every precaution to minimize interruptions to the normal life of your family and/or operation of your business, but as you can appreciate, there may be some inconvenience during construction. We would like to thank you in advance for your patience and co-operation. For construction activity hours of work, the City of Ottawa follows provincial requirements and the City’s Noise By-law (2017-255). A noise by-law exemption will be in place for this work.

Construction notice (July 2023)

In late-July, the City of Ottawa will start construction on Riverside Drive and Terminal Avenue. This work will include the relocation of City storm and sanitary sewers on 1460 Riverside Drive into the City right of way. Construction on Riverside Drive, Terminal Avenue, and the Transitway will also begin in July. This work is being conducted as these sewers are necessary in order to decommission the existing sewers that are currently in operation on 1460 Riverside Drive.

What: Relocation of City storm and sanitary sewers on 1460 Riverside Drive into the City’s right of way.

Why: This work is necessary to decommission the existing sewers that are currently in operation through 1460 Riverside Drive.

When: Construction is planned to begin in late-July 2023 and be completed by spring 2024.

Where: The proposed work will occur on Riverside Drive, just south of the Terminal Avenue intersection, to approximately 150 metres south of the intersection, and also on Terminal Avenue from the Transitway to Riverside Drive.

Who: The City of Ottawa has retained the Contractor, Taggart Construction Limited, to complete the work.

Safety

During construction, it is our priority to ensure the safety of the public. We need your co-operation to make it safer for everyone, please stay clear of all construction equipment and open excavations. If applicable, please tell your children about the dangers of playing near a construction area.

Traffic management

Residents can expect construction traffic activity within the City’s right of way. To accommodate the proposed construction, lane reductions on Riverside Drive and Terminal Avenue will be required to facilitate the work. 

Pedestrian and cyclist access will be maintained through the work zone at all times during construction.

Construction disruptions

The Contractor will take every precaution to minimize interruptions to the everyday life of your family and/or operation of your business, but, as you can appreciate, there may be some inconvenience during the course of the work, such as traffic delays, noise and dust. You may also feel vibrations due to heavy equipment operations. Vibrations from construction activities are quite common and rarely cause any problems. We would like to thank you for your patience and co-operation.

Night work

The City’s noise by-law normally prohibits work between the hours of 10 pm and 7 am, Monday to Saturday and between 10 pm and 9 am on Sunday, however construction during the overnight hours may be required to complete this work. A noise by-law exemption permit will be obtained to allow work to occur during overnight hours as needed.
