3071 Riverside Drive - Proposed Park

The following concept plan has been prepared to illustrate the proposed development of a new park situated on part of 3071 Riverside Drive.  The park will have an area of 0.6 hectares (1.5 acres).  Proposed park features include an accessible asphalt pathway extending from Riverside Drive to Springland Drive, a double pickleball court, an accessible play structure for children from 18 months to 12 years of age, swings, an overhead climbing structure, a sand play area, a gazebo, seating areas, an open play area and landscape planting.

The community is invited to provide comments on the proposed concept plan, as shown below.

Please note that the proposed concept plan was developed taking into consideration the online survey results, which are summarized below.

Please direct any comments regarding the proposed concept plan to the Parks Planner listed below. Comments on the park concept plan are requested by March 11, 2019.

Online Survey

An online survey questionnaire was conducted from October to November 2017 regarding potential types of amenities to include in the park development.  Thank you to all who took the time to answer the survey.  A total of 109 responses were received.  The following is a summary of the survey results:

  • Park benches, 76 per cent
  • Park pathway connection between Springland Drive and Riverside Drive, 67 per cent
  • Shade structure, 64 per cent
  • Park entry feature at the park entrance from Riverside Drive with a seating area overlooking the Rideau River, 61 per cent
  • Picnic tables, 42 per cent
  • Senior playground area including a play structure for children from 5 to 12 years old, 39 per cent
  • Orchard, 39 per cent
  • Splash pad, 36 per cent
  • Swing set, 34 per cent
  • Open play area, 31 per cent
  • Junior playground area including a play structure for children from 18 months to 5 years old, 29 per cent
  • Sand play area, 18 per cent
  • Games tables, 15 per cent

Other park amenity suggestions received from survey respondents: tennis court, community allotment garden, off-leash dog area, mountain biking, shuffleboard, lawn bowling, natural elements, outdoor fitness equipment, velodrome, bubble rock, outdoor ice rink, speed skating oval, skateboard/scooter area, basketball court, volleyball area, no amenities.

Conflicting comments: There was mixed support and opposition regarding the potential development of a splash pad and a playground.

Update: April 23, 2020

Thank you to everyone who participated in the public consultation for the proposed park at 3095 Riverside Drive. The following changes to the park design were made in response to the public comments:

  • The main park pathway has been changed to a 3.0m wide multi-use pathway.
  • The gazebo has been shifted closer to the pickleball courts.
  • The playground has been shifted east away from the existing townhouse development located south of the park.
  • The playground equipment has been changed to a natural playground style including the provision of a hill slide.
  • The frame for the two-bay swing has been changed to a wooden post frame.
  • A parent-and-child swing has been added.
  • The open play area has been relocated to the central portion of the park.
  • A pollinator garden has been added.

The park was previously part of the property known as 3071 Riverside Drive. A new municipal address of 3095 Riverside Drive has been assigned to the park block.
