Residents of the Trailwest community and other communities in Kanata South will be pleased to hear that the City is planning to build a new cycling corridor that will link together existing pathways. The project comes out of the Ottawa Cycling Plan as a “missing link” in the cycling network (specifically P1-29). The project will interest walkers as well as cyclists as it will be designed for both user groups. The “missing link” is described as a connection to the Trans Canada Trail, Superstore and Eagleson Road Crossing leading to existing Bridlewood Pathway corridor to the east. A feasibility study is required for the future construction of this multi-use pathway (MUP) system.
A key map [PDF 0.85 MB] has been provided of the project area. The purpose of a functional planning study is to:
- Develop an understanding of the project parameters
- Consider what type of cycling facility and where
- Connect with various stakeholders
- Identify budgetary constraints going forward
- Develop recommendations
The new east-west MUP would be bounded by Akerson Road to the west and Eagleson Road on the east. Further west, a connection is required to connect to Michael Cowpland Drive and the Trans Canada Trail. The study examined the feasibility of a continuous pathway either along City road right-of-ways, across the Hydro Corridor or a combination thereof. Where routing on local streets is explored as an alternative, the review considers painted bike lanes. The Hazeldean Pumping Station is included as an option to consider utilizing when making this much needed connection to the Trans Canada Trail. A connection is also required on the east side of Eagleson Road to the pathway system through the Bridlewood community. There is the potential to construct a crossride at the signalized intersection adjacent to Real Canadian Superstore at Eagleson to help with this connection.
The general goal for the Akerson Multi-Use Pathway “missing link” project is to:
- Provide a new route for recreational users that could also be used for commuter and utilitarian
- Provide connections to existing multi-use pathways
- Improve the connections across a busy signalized intersections for cyclists and pedestrians
Concept plans [PDF 7.57 MB] have been provided. Drawings 1 and 2 illustrate Option 1 for the section along Michael Cowpland and Akerson Road connecting the hydro corridor to the Trans Canada Trail. The preliminary solution includes painted bike lanes on these roadways.
Drawings 3, 4 and 5 illustrate an alignment for a new multi-use pathway within the hydro corridor between Akerson Road and Eagleson and beyond. At this time, it is proposed that the new pathway connects through Pony Park to Equestrian Drive and further to the existing Bridlewood pathway system. The alignment through Pony Park is based on the concept of desire lines.

The goal is the completion of the Functional Planning Study by September 2016. Preliminary/detailed designs would then be prepared based on the functional planning study with the goal of construction in 2018.
