Project description

The City of Ottawa will replace the existing wood Beechern pedestrian bridge with a new steel pedestrian bridge. The bridge is located in Stittsville along the Poole Creek pathway in the forest between the Holy Spirit Elementary School and Beechfern Drive.

Approved project funds to date are $644,000.

Construction notice (June 2022)

Beginning in July, the City of Ottawa will start construction for the replacement of the Beechfern Pedestrian bridge in your neighbourhood.

What: The existing wood pedestrian bridge that is in poor condition will be replaced with a new steel pedestrian bridge. Work will include the planting of new trees and shrubs on the west side of the bridge.

Why: This project is required to replace the aging infrastructure and to improve reliability.

When: Construction is expected to begin early July and be completed by late August 2022.

Where: The pedestrian bridge is located along the Poole Creek pathway in the forest between the Holy Spirit Elementary School and Beechfern Drive. The pathway is located between Stittsville Main Street and Beechfern Drive.

Who: The City of Ottawa has retained the contractor, AWD Construction, to complete the work.

Traffic management

The pathway will be closed on the east and west side of the bridge. Detour signage will be installed on the path for pedestrians and cyclists. Traffic will not be impacted on any roads.

Construction disruptions

The Contractor will take every precaution to minimize interruptions to the everyday life of your family and/or operation of your business, but, as you can appreciate, there may be some inconvenience during the course of the work, such as traffic delays, noise and dust. You may also feel vibrations due to heavy equipment operations. Vibrations from construction activities are quite common and rarely cause any problems. We would like to thank you for your patience and co-operation. For construction activity hours of work, the City of Ottawa follows provincial requirements and the City’s Noise By-law (2017-255).

Tree removal (March 2022)

Beginning in March 2022, the City will remove trees in the forest between the Holy Spirit Elementary School and Beechfern Drive in advance of the Beechfern pedestrian bridge replacement project planned for summer 2022. Tree removal is required in order to provide access for the bridge replacement. This project will include the removal of 24 trees on the west side of the existing pedestrian bridge. The replacement of the pedestrian bridge, including the planting of new trees and shrubs, is scheduled to take place from July to August 2022. Construction notices will be sent prior to work commencing.

Why: The trees must be removed before March 31, 2022, in advance of the bird and bat nesting seasons, which begin in April 2022.

When: Work will start early March and take approximately one week to complete.

Where: The work area is located on City of Ottawa property on the west side of the pedestrian bridge adjacent to the Poole Creek pathway in the forest between the Holy Spirit Elementary School and Beechfern Drive. The pathway is located between Stittsville Main Street and Beechfern Drive.

Who: The City of Ottawa has retained the Contractor, Carty Tree Services, to complete the work.

Traffic Impacts

The pathway will remain open. Access for pedestrians and cyclists will be maintained. Traffic will not be impacted on Beechfern Drive or Stittsville Main Street. Contractor parking will be provided in a portion of the parking bay along Stittsville Main Street where the pathway entrance is located.
