Construction noise notice (August 2018)

As you are aware, construction of the new Rideau Canal Crossing pedestrian and cycling bridge is well underway.

Who: The City of Ottawa has retained Pomerleau Inc. as the general contractor to complete the work.

Why: The City of Ottawa is constructing a new cycling/pedestrian bridge across the Rideau Canal between Fifth Avenue and Clegg Street.

What: The pouring of the main deck concrete slab from the west abutment to the east abutment. This will be a single continuous pour.

When: The pouring of the main deck concrete is scheduled to start at 5 am on August 21, weather permitting, and will be complete by 8 pm. If there is inclement weather during the proposed pouring date, the pour will be postponed to the next weather appropriate day.

Where: Work will take place on the main bridge span between the west and east abutments, with concrete delivery vehicles and concrete pumping vehicles on the west and east side of the bridge.

Why: The City of Ottawa is constructing a new cycling/pedestrian bridge across the Rideau Canal between Fifth Avenue and Clegg Street.

What: Steel girder over of the centre of the Canal channel. After consultation with the Ward Councillor and Parks Canada, the City is directing the Contractor to erect the length of girder that spans the Canal channel during the early morning of July 13.

When: The steel girder erection is scheduled to start at 6 am on July 13, weather permitting, and will be complete by 9 am to accommodate the daily opening of the Rideau Canal lock systems. If any complications arise during the erection, the installation will be postponed to the evening of July 16, starting at 7 pm.

Where: Work will take place from the west side of the Canal, and immediately over the centre of the Canal Channel.

Construction noise and night work notice (June 2018)

As you are aware, construction of the new Rideau Canal Crossing pedestrian and cycling bridge is well underway. The project requires the installation of structural steel girders to span the Canal from east to west.

Who: The City of Ottawa has retained Pomerleau Inc. as the general contractor to complete the work.

Why: The City of Ottawa is constructing a new cycling/pedestrian bridge across the Rideau Canal between Fifth Avenue and Clegg Street.

What: Steel girder installation/assembly on the East side of the Canal will commence June 26 and continue until June 29. After consultation with the Ward Councillor, the City is directing the contractor to do his carpentry work on two nights to allow the very noisy impact bolting of steel assembly to occur during the day.

When: The carpentry night work is scheduled to take place on June 26 and June 27, weather permitting.

Where: Work will take place at ground level on the east side of the Canal.

Road closure and detour notice - Update (May 2018)

As you are aware, construction of the new Rideau Canal Crossing pedestrian and cycling bridge is well underway. The project requires the installation of a new watermain under the canal. This notice is to provide an update to the Notice that was issued in April 2018.

Who: The City of Ottawa has retained Pomerleau Inc. as the general contractor who will complete the work.

Why: The City of Ottawa is constructing a new cycling/pedestrian bridge across the Rideau Canal between Fifth Avenue and Clegg Street as well as a new watermain under the canal.

What: Installing and connecting the new water main. City Drinking Water Services will advise you if there is to be any disruption of your water service.

When: Work started Monday, April 16 and is now expected to be completed by Friday, May 25, depending on ground conditions and weather.

Where: The new water main will be installed from the intersection of Herridge Street and Echo Drive under the Canal to Queen Elizabeth Driveway and Third Avenue.

On-street parking and traffic updates

  • Week of May 14 - One lane of Herridge Street will remain open and access at Clegg Street and Hazel Avenue closed.
  • Week of May 21 - Herridge Street will be closed to all traffic and Echo Drive will be opened at Hazel Street and Clegg Street for local traffic only.

There will be local vehicle traffic only on Echo Drive and Herridge Street during this work and residents on Herridge Street requiring on street parking passes should contact the City Inspector identified below.

Normal traffic is expected to be restored by May 25.

Who: The City of Ottawa has retained Pomerleau Inc. as the general contractor who will complete the work.

Why: The City of Ottawa is constructing a new cycling/pedestrian bridge across the Rideau Canal between Fifth Avenue and Clegg Street.

What: The capping of the existing watermain will require an excavation near the intersection of Fourth Avenue and Queen Elizabeth Driveway. As such, access to Queen Elizabeth Driveway will be closed to traffic during this work. Fourth Avenue between Queen Elizabeth Driveway and O’Connor Street will be designated for local traffic only. City Drinking Water Services will advise you if there is to be any disruption of water service.

When: Work will commence on Monday, April 16 at 7 am. The work is scheduled as a two-day event for April 16 and 17.

Where: Fourth Avenue between O’Connor Street and Queen Elizabeth Driveway.

When: Work will commence on Monday, April 16 with expected completion by Friday, May 18, depending on ground conditions and weather.        

Where: The new water main will be installed from the intersection of Herridge Street and Echo Drive under the Canal to Queen Elizabeth Driveway and Third Avenue.

On-street parking & traffic

  • Week 1 - Horizontal underground drilling operations for the new watermain will require narrowing Herridge Street to one lane yielding to oncoming traffic and setting up equipment on Herridge Street between McGillvray Street and Echo Drive.
  • Week 2 - Herridge Street will be closed to all traffic and Echo Drive will be opened at Hazel Avenue and at Clegg Street for access by local traffic only.
  • Week 3 - One lane of Herridge Street will be re-opened and access at Clegg Street and Hazel Avenue closed, as per week one.
  • Week 4 - One lane of Herridge Street will remain open and access at Clegg Street and Hazel Avenue closed, as per week one.
  • Week 5 - Herridge Street will again be closed to all traffic and Echo Drive will be opened at Hazel Street and Clegg Street for local traffic only, as per week two.

There will be local vehicle traffic only on Echo Drive and Herridge Street during this work and residents on Herridge Street requiring on street parking passes should contact the City Inspector identified below.

Normal traffic is expected to be restored by May 18.

The project requires the replacement of an old watermain under the west side of Queen Elizabeth Driveway from Fourth Avenue to Third Avenue and under Queen Elizabeth Driveway towards the canal.

Who: The City of Ottawa has retained Pomerleau Inc. as the general contractor who will complete the work.

Why: The City of Ottawa is constructing a new cycling/pedestrian bridge across the Rideau Canal between Fifth Avenue and Clegg Street as well as a new watermain under the canal.

What: Installing and connecting the new watermain. City Drinking Water Services will advise you if there is to be any disruption of your water service.

When: Work will commence on Saturday, April 28 with expected completion by Friday, May 11, depending on ground conditions and weather. Work will be carried out on weekends and at night to minimize traffic disruption on Queen Elizabeth Driveway.

Where: The new watermain will be installed from Fourth Avenue to Third Avenue along the west side of Queen Elizabeth Driveway and across to the canal.

Queen Elizabeth Driveway between Second Avenue and Fifth Avenue will be closed from 7 am, Saturday, April 28 to Monday, April 30 at 6 am. Traffic will be detoured on Second Avenue to O’Connor Street, to Fifth Avenue as per the attached map. The same closure and detour will occur each evening from 7 pm to 6 am from April 30 to May 4. If additional time is needed the same closure will occur each evening of the week of May 7. Normal traffic is expected to be restored by May 18.

What: The new watermain will require excavation on the west side of Queen Elizabeth Driveway at Third Avenue to cap the existing main. City Drinking Water Services will advise you if there is to be any disruption of water service.

When: Work will commence on Thursday, April 19 at 7 am. The work is scheduled as a two-day event for April 19 and 20 between 7 am and 6 pm.

Where: Third Avenue at Queen Elizabeth Driveway.

Where: 4th Avenue between O’Conner and Queen Elizabeth Drive.

Construction notice noise (October 2017)

As you are aware, construction of the new Rideau Canal Crossing pedestrian and cycling bridge is well underway. The project requires the piling of foundations in the Canal and on both sides

Who: The City of Ottawa has hired Pomerleau Inc., as the General Contractor who will complete the work.

Why: The City of Ottawa is constructing a new cycling/pedestrian bridge across the Rideau Canal between 5th Avenue and Clegg Street.

What: Piling operations will start at the beginning of November on the west side and are scheduled to be completed within 2 to 3 weeks. The equipment will then be relocated to the east side of the Canal for another 2 to 3 week operation duration. Residents should expect intermittent pounding sounds and controlled vibration in the earth between 7 am and 5 pm weekdays only. Vibration will be monitored and kept below the allowable limit set by the Design Engineers.

When: From approximately November 1 to December 15.

Where: The piling operations will take place on both sides of the Canal and in the Canal between 4th Avenue and Clegg Street.

When: The road closure will begin at 3 p.m. on October 31. The work is scheduled as a two-day event for November 1 and 2.

Where: Echo Drive will be closed between 447A Echo Drive and Clegg Street.

Archaeological investigation work notice - July 2016

Beginning in the week of 18 July 2016, the City of Ottawa will undertake archaeological testing on lands on either side of the Rideau Canal at:

  • Fifth Avenue, near Queen Elizabeth Driveway,
  • Clegg Street, near Colonel By Drive 

This work is to further investigate any archaeological conditions and will support the design of the future Rideau Canal Crossing from Fifth Avenue to Clegg Street. Design of the bridge is ongoing, and construction continues to be anticipated within the second stage of the City’s Transportation Master Plan, 2020 to 2025. 

Who: Golder Associates has been retained to undertake archaeological investigation work for the project. 

Why: This preliminary work is required to support the design of a cyclist and pedestrian bridge that will cross the Rideau Canal from Fifth to Clegg. 

What: The archaeological investigation work will involve digging small pits and testing for any historical artifacts. This is a normal requirement for a project of this scope. There will be small excavation equipment present to carry out the work. 

When: The work is scheduled to start during the week of July 18, 2016 and will take about five to seven days to complete. Work may be delayed depending on weather. 

Where:  There will be work conducted on both sides of the Rideau Canal. On the west side near Fifth Avenue and Queen Elizabeth Driveway, and east near Colonel By Driveway and Clegg Street. Access to the multiuse pathways along both sides of the Canal will be maintained during this activity.
