Project limits and scope
Detailed design of Rideau Street between Sussex Drive and Dalhousie Street began in November 2015. The project consists of the surface reconstruction of Rideau Street, including all roadway and streetscaping elements. The detailed design is anticipated to be complete by the end of July 2016 and construction will be coordinated with the expansion of the Rideau Centre and the construction of the proposed LRT station on Rideau Street, currently underway. Construction of a temporary sidewalk on the south side of Rideau Street in front of the Rideau Centre (from the Freiman Bridge Pedestrian Overpass to Nicholas Street) will commence in early summer 2016.
The works proposed include the introduction, rehabilitation and/or replacement of:
- Sidewalks, cycling facilities, and transit facilities;
- Opportunities for street amenities including landscaping and public art;
- Street lighting and regulatory signage;
- Traffic control signal system;
- Road structure and pavement;
- Watermains, sanitary, storm and combined sewers;
- Lateral services to the property line; and
- Utilities as required.
Nicholas Street transformation
The City of Ottawa is also working with Cadillac Fairview Corporation Ltd. (owner of the Rideau Centre) to transform Nicholas Street from Rideau Street to Besserer Street into a pedestrian public space, to be called Ogilvy Square. As part of the Rideau / Arts Precinct, the space will support a variety of outdoor functions including cafes and programmable space for artistic installations and special events. The detailed design for Ogilvy Square is scheduled to be completed by the end of April 2016, with construction beginning May 2016.
The public is invited to attend a Public Information Drop-In Session to obtain information regarding the proposed works for both the detailed design of Rideau Street from Sussex Drive to Dalhousie Street and the detailed design of Nicholas Street (Ogilvy Square). Participants can provide feedback and comments to City staff and the design team.
