Wateridge Village Phase 1B - Two Parks 2018

The Wateridge Village Community located on the site of the former Canadian Forces Base Rockcliffe will eventually have ten (10) new parks. The combined area of parkland in the community will be 21.93 hectares of land. Two parks (Park 5 and Park 8) are currently under construction and will be complete in Summer 2018. Phase 1B will contain two more parks that will begin construction in Summer 2018 and includes one of the two planned community parks.

South Community Park 2

Park 2 is 5.03 hectares in size.

The amenities in this park will include:

  • Splash pad water play feature
  • Community gathering space with seating
  • Picnic area
  • Playground with senior and junior play equipment, and youth fitness structure
  • Full size soccer field
  • Double lit tennis courts
  • Lit boarded hockey rink
  • Puddle rink
  • Integrated skateboard park
  • Fitness signage with benches
  • Informal seating
  • Free play open space
  • Park shade structure
  • Pathways
  • Benches
  • Dry cells (stormwater management feature)
  • Landscaping, new trees and planting and preservation of existing trees

Town Square Parkette 8

Park 8 is 0.32 hectares in size and will function as the ‘town square’ and provide a place for the community to gather. The concept for the space ties together the past, present, and future influences of the site and incorporates history from the CFB Rockcliffe army base (specifically commemorating Lt Col William G Barker VC), and modern amenities and aesthetics.

The amenities in this park will include:

  • A splash pad
  • Multi-purpose and multi-season community gathering space with seating
  • Park shade structure
  • Commemorative features
  • Pathways
  • Benches and tables
  • Landscaping, new trees and planting.

What we heard

Community Park 2

We summarized your comments below along with our response and recommended revisions to the plan if applicable.

  1. Additional parking requested

    1. Given that there will be 46 on street parking spaces available adjacent to the park we will not increase the parking within the park immediately.
    2. Parking will be monitored over the first 2 to 5 years of operation.
    3. Parking could be extended in the future if warranted.
  2. Reduce the number of facilities in the park

    1. The Parks Master Plan (Appendix A of Former CFB Rockcliffe Community Design Plan 2015) identified this park as the primary active park in the community, thus a variety of active amenities is appropriate to fully service the community.
    2. Reducing the number of facilities is not recommended.
  3. Lights and noise

    1. Concern that light and noise spillage will disturb residents
    2. Dark sky compliant lights will be used
    3. Active facilities that may generate noise will be located at a distance from houses.
    4. Buffer area planted with trees will be incorporated into the design.
  4. Special requests for park - off-leash area for dogs and community gardens

    1. These could be planned into the northern community park, which will have more passive greenspace and natural areas.
  5. Special requests for buildings - washrooms and indoor space

    1. These items are beyond the scope and budget of this project.
    2. They could be addressed in the future should additional funding be secured for a community building or field house.
    3. A potential location for a small building is shown on the revised plan.

Update: June 05, 2019

Construction update

Please note that the anticipated construction for both South Community Park 2, and for the Town Square Parkette 8, has been delayed due to the slower than anticipated construction schedule of the surrounding community. Canada Lands Company, the developer of the community, is responsible for the timing and construction of the parks, and therefore, is in control of the park construction schedule.

The South Community Park 2 is tentatively anticipated to start construction in 2020. However, at this time, the Town Square Parkette 8 has been put on hold. When the City receives further notification of the anticipated construction schedule for both parks, an update will be posted on this webpage.
