Celebrating Ottawa Small Business Week

Mayor Jim Watson today proclaimed October 20 to 26 Ottawa Small Business Week, in celebration of the contributions small businesses make to Ottawa’s economic growth and prosperity.

Small businesses are the foundation of Ottawa’s economy, providing important services and a variety of employment opportunities. More than 35 per cent of jobs in Ottawa come from small business. In 2016, more than 93 per cent of all businesses located in Ottawa were small businesses.

Throughout Ottawa Small Business Week, residents can learn more about how to support Ottawa’s diverse and vibrant small-business community at a series of events:

Small Business Summit and Small Business Awards
Tuesday, October 22 and Wednesday, October 23
The Westin Hotel, Governor General's Ballroom, 11 Colonel By Drive

This first ever conference from the Ottawa Board of Trade and Ottawa Business Journal is specifically targeted at small businesses with between five and 25 employees. The event aims to inform and inspire small business owners and managers.

The Canadian Federation of Independent Business invites you to visit your local businesses and help spread the word about why it’s so important to shop small by sharing your experiences on social media, using the hashtag #SmallBizSaturday.

  • Small and medium-sized enterprises are commercial, for-profit businesses with fewer than 500 employees that bring in less than $50 million in national annual revenue.
  • Small businesses have up to 49 employees, while medium-sized businesses employ between 50 and 499 people.
