Check the Voters’ List and apply to vote by the new Special Mail-in Ballot for the 2020 Cumberland By-election

Starting Saturday, September 5, you can verify that your name and information are on the Voters’ List for the 2020 Cumberland By-election and apply to vote by the new Special Mail-in Ballot.

The Voters’ List

The Voters’ List identifies people who are eligible to vote by name, address and residency status. You can vote in the 2020 Cumberland By-election if, on Voting Day, Monday, October 5, you are:

A resident of Ottawa, or an owner or tenant of land in the city, or the spouse of such an owner or tenant;

  • A Canadian citizen who is at least 18 years old; and
  • Not prohibited from voting by law.

If you live in a different ward, you may not vote in this by-election, even if you are the owner or tenant of a separate property in Cumberland Ward.

If you live outside of Ottawa and have a qualifying address in Cumberland Ward, you may vote in this by-election.

If you own or rent properties in more than one ward in Ottawa, you must choose one ward to vote in and be on the Voters' List for that qualifying address. You must personally own or rent a property in Cumberland Ward to be a non-resident elector.

New – Voting by Special Mail-in Ballot

For this by-election, electors can apply to vote by Special Mail-in Ballot if they cannot go to a voting place or feel uncomfortable voting in person. You may request to vote by Special Mail-in Ballot from Saturday, September 5 until Sunday, September 13 at 5 pm. Apply online at ottawa.ca/vote, by mail to the Elections office at 1221-B Cyrville Road, Ottawa, ON, K1J 7S8, by email, or in-person at the Elections Office, by appointment only.

Special Ballot Voter Kits, with instructions on how to vote, a voter declaration form, a ballot, a ballot secrecy envelope and a prepaid return envelope will be mailed the week of September 14. Completed special ballots must be mailed or delivered to the Elections Office at 1221 Cyrville Rd, Unit B or deposited in the mail slot located at the front entrance to the Orléans Client Service Centre at 255 Centrum Blvd, no later than 4:30 pm on Voting Day (October 5, 2020). Ballots received after 4:30 pm on Voting Day will not be counted.

How to check the Voters’ List

From Saturday, September 5 to Monday, October 5, you can verify your information on the Voters’ List by:

  • Using the Am I on the Voters’ List? tool at ottawa.ca/vote
  • Calling 3-1-1
  • Calling the Elections Office at 613-580-2660
  • Making an appointment at the Elections Office
  • Making an appointment at an open Client Service Centre

Add your name or update your information on the Voters’ List

You can add your name or update your information on the Voters’ List by:

  • Using the Am I on the Voters’ List? tool at ottawa.ca/vote from Saturday, September 5 to Sunday, September 13 at 5 pm.
  • Mailing or dropping off an Application to Add or Amend My Information on the Voters’ List to the Elections Office at 1221 Cyrville Road, Unit B, from Saturday, September 5 to Sunday, September 13 at 5 pm.
  • Dropping off an Application to Add or Amend My Information on the Voters’ List at an open Client Service Centre from Tuesday, September 8 to Friday, September 11.
  • Emailing an Application to Add or Amend My Information on the Voters’ List to the Elections Office from Saturday, September 5 to Sunday, September 13 at 5 pm.
  • Faxing an Application to Add or Amend My Information on the Voters’ List to 613-580-2661 from Saturday, September 5 to Sunday, September 13 at 5 pm.
  • Bringing a completed Application to Add or Amend My Information on the Voters’ List to any voting place on Monday, September 28, Tuesday, September 29 or Monday, October 5. This application will also be available at all voting places on voting days.

Remove a name from the Voters’ List

If you want to remove your name or if you think someone else’s name should be removed because they passed away or moved, email, mail or bring an Application to Remove a Name from the Voters’ List and supporting information to the Elections Office at 1221-B Cyrville Road by Monday, October 5, by appointment only. This application will also be available at the open Client Service Centres.

The deadline to make changes to the Voter’s List is Monday, October 5.

Elections Office Hours

The Elections Office will be open, by appointment only, during regular business hours from Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. The Elections Office will also be open on September 5, 6, 7, 12 and 13 in order to assist electors during the Revision Period and the Special Mail-in Ballot application period. Staff will be available from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm by phone at 613-580-2660, by email or in-person by appointment only at 1221 Cyrville Road, Unit B. On September 13, the Elections Office will be open until 5 pm.

Voter notification letters

Eligible electors on the Voters’ List will receive a voter notification letter in the mail in the coming weeks. The letter will tell you where, when and how you can vote. If you add or update your information on the Voters’ List and do not apply to receive a Special Mail-in Ballot, you will receive a revised voter notification letter at the end of September.

Eligible electors who are not on the Voters’ List are entitled to vote. Electors can add their name to the Voters’ List at a voting place on Advance Vote Days and Voting Day.

Where to vote

Starting Saturday, September 5, you can find the voting place nearest to you on the Where Do I Vote? tool at ottawa.ca/vote, or by calling 3-1-1 or the Elections Office at 613-580-2660.

Voting places will offer anywhere voting, meaning that electors can vote at any voting place, regardless of their address. Electors may cast a ballot at any of the following locations:

  • Bearbrook Community Hall, 8720 Russell Road
  • Carlsbad Springs Community Centre, 6020 Piperville Road
  • François Dupuis Recreation Centre, 2263 Portobello Boulevard
  • Navan Memorial Centre, 1295 Colonial Road
  • Redeemer Alliance Church, 4825 Innes Road
  • R.J. Kennedy Arena and Community Hall,1115 Dunning Road
  • Sarsfield Community Hall, 3585 Sarsfield Road
  • South Fallingbrook Community Centre, 998 Valin Street

Voting day is Monday, October 5. Advance Vote Days take place on Monday, September 28 and Tuesday, September 29. Voting places will be open from 10 am to 8 pm.
