The Transit Commission today received the budget status report for the first quarter of 2018, which ended with a surplus of $1.08 million. The surplus relates to managing staffing of positions, and lower fuel costs.
Budget adjustments made today, as a result of the November opening of LRT, will be revenue-neutral. Increases in operating costs and bus detour expenses will be offset by eliminating payments to Rideau Transit Group and other provisions contained in the LRT project agreement.
In the coming months, OC Transpo will conduct a number of product tests on mechanical, safety and customer comfort initiatives. A small number of buses will be equipped with operator barriers to restrict customer access to operators, and a lamp diffuser to minimize the glare on bus windshields. These initiatives are informed by industry best practices, and will help guide future purchases.
As part of OC Transpo’s Transecure program, the Commission recognized bus operators Bruce and Sharon for their role in saving a teenager’s life earlier this year. A potentially tragic situation was avoided because of their quick action and commitment to public service.
