Road closure: Harvey Street (east side) at Main Street (March 11 to April 26, 2024 - UPDATED)

The City of Ottawa has commenced construction on the new watermains, sewers, and associated road rehabilitation work as part of the Greenfield-Main-Hawthorne et al. reconstruction project. To facilitate this work, the City of Ottawa has approved the closure of the intersection of Harvey Street at Main Street as outlined below.

What: A full road closure of Harvey Street (east side) at Main Street. Harvey Street between Concord Street and Main Street remains open with local access via Havelock Street.

Why: The intersection closure is required for the safety of residents and workers, as there is limited area to accommodate the open cut excavation and the necessary labour, materials and equipment.

When: The intersection closure will begin on March 11 and run through April 26, 2024 (UPDATED). The scheduled closures may be modified as needed, for example if weather affects the schedule, or if conditions change.

Where: Harvey Street (east side) at Main Street.

Who: The City of Ottawa has retained the contractor Green Infrastructure Partners Inc. (GIP), formerly Aecon, to complete the work.

Traffic impacts

Access and egress from Main Street to Harvey Street east of Main Street is closed. Local access to Havey Street will be maintained via Havelock Street. Local access is defined as those living within the limits of the road closure. A portion of the on-street parking on Harvey Street near Main Street will be removed to facilitate the work. Note that the southbound closure of Greenfield Avenue and Main Street (separate notice) begins simultaneously with the closure detailed herein.

Garbage collection

The contractor is aware of the garbage collection schedule and is required to maintain access so that garbage can be collected at the curb. If vehicular access is interrupted for any reason, the contractor is responsible to move the garbage from the homeowner’s curb to a common location where it can be picked up. Empty containers will then be returned to the appropriate homeowners/businesses.

Construction disruptions

Green Infrastructure Partners (GIP), formerly Aecon, will take every precaution to minimize interruptions to the everyday life of your family and/or operation of your business, but there may be some inconvenience during the course of the operation of the work, such as delays when travelling through the construction zone, noise and dust. Niven's wood ditch stabilization - construction (March 2024)

This notice is to advise that construction in your neighbourhood will be undertaken in March 2024. This work is being conducted to stabilize the roadside ditch to mitigate ditch erosions and improve the safety of roadways in your community.

What: The construction work consists of lining the bed of the ditch with riprap, constructing an armour stone wall on the roadside bank and a vegetated buttress on the hillside bank, and replacing a ditch culvert.

Why: Over the past few years, it is evident that Niven's Woods Park has witnessed moderate to severe erosions and soil washout along its main creek or ditch running along Niven’s Place and Burrows Road. The main objective of this proposed work is to construct a long-term solution that can withstand the ongoing ditch erosions and stabilize the ditch banks.

When: Tree removal work is planned in mid-March 2024 and turtle fencing will be installed in April 2024. The ditch work is scheduled from July 2024 to September 2024.

Where: Construction activity can be expected on the east side of Burrows Road from Veery Lane to the north for around 100 meters.

Who: The City of Ottawa has retained the contractor, Premier North Ltd. to complete this work.

Traffic management

Residents can expect construction traffic and activity within the City’s right of way. One lane will be maintained on Burrows Road throughout the construction period. Minor delays should be anticipated. The existing trail entrance (facing Veery Lane) to Niven’s Woods Park will be closed during the ditch culvert replacement.

Noise

You may notice noise during the underground investigation work. The City of Ottawa Noise By-law (2017-255) allows construction activity to occur weekdays between 7 am and 10 pm. On Saturdays, work is permitted between 7 am and 10 pm, while Sundays, statutory and public holidays work is permitted between 9 am and 10 pm.
