Camp Summer Fun Recreation eGuide [ PDF - 1.01 mb ]
The City will offer a modified summer camp which will begin on July 6 on the condition that Provincial restrictions are relaxed to allow day camps for children and in accordance to the stage two guidelines announced by the Province. Camp Summer Fun will follow physical distancing guidelines as set out by Ottawa Public Health, group size limitations and other Provincial directives beginning July 6, 2020 at selected sites.

Camp Summer Fun.
What are the operational hours for the camp?
Monday to Friday, 8 am to 5 pm are the regular camp hours. No pre or post-care will be offered.
When will the Camp Summer Fun be offered?
Weekly from Monday July 6, 2020 to Friday, August 28, 2020, for a total of 8 weeks.
What is the cost of the camp?
The fee is $219 per week ($175.25 for 4-day week)
How was the camp fee calculated?
The Camp Summer Fun fee is based on the fee charged for our Winter School camp, which is a traditional camp aimed at children aged four to 12 years. Due to current restrictions and safety measures required to prevent transmission of COVID-19, the camps will not include field trips, swimming, skating, guest speakers and entertainers, or specialty summer camp programming.
When will registration begin?
The Camp Summer Fun Recreation eGuide [ PDF - 1.01 mb ] is now available online for you to browse available programs at selected sites. Registration for Camp Summer Fun will be available online only, starting Monday, June 15 at 9 pm. Please note that summer camps barcodes will not be available on JoinOttawa for this session.
What is the age groups for camps?
Typically, summer camp groups would be divided by ages 4 to 5 years, 6 to 9 years and 10 to 12 years. For this summer, the age group for Camp Summer Fun will be 4 to 12 years old in order to include siblings and members of the same household in the same grouping.
What are the ratios for camps?
Camp counsellor to children ratios will increase as provincial guidelines allow for larger numbers of people to gather. Once provincial restrictions lift and the gathering limits increase, our staffing model will be 2 staff counsellors for each group of 8 children, and one full-time staff member at each site for support.
Sites running camps with more than 3 camp groupings will also have additional staff for oversight, coordination and cleaning.
What safety measures will be taken to minimize risk at Camp Summer Fun?
Each camp group will be assigned its own washroom, room(s), isolation room (in case a child exhibits symptoms) and outdoor space. Staff will not be shared, and groups will not cross paths. This strategy will prevent the number of touch-point areas and reduce the possibility of transmission.
Campers will complete a daily self-assessment prior to arriving at camp and will submit the assessment to the staff online. The sign-in process will take place outside and physical distancing will be enforced. Anyone who is unable to complete the self-assessment at home, will have a temperature screening and health check conducted on site prior to camp sign-in.
Staff will be keeping daily records of anyone (e.g., camp participants, staff and essential visitors) entering the program setting who stays for 15 minutes or longer. Records, including their name, contact information, time of arrival and departure, and screening completion will be kept up-to-date and available to facilitate contact tracing in the event of a confirmed COVID-19 case or outbreak.
Staff will be required to complete a daily self-assessment and will be wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), when a distance of 2 metres cannot be maintained.
Physical distancing of 2 metres will be emphasized and enforced, with the exception of staff interventions for behaviour management and issuing first aid.
Participant starts to show symptoms of COVID-19 while in camp?
Protocols will be in place if a camp participant begins to show symptoms of COVID-19 while in camp, including immediate notification to the parent/guardian and the need for immediate pick-up. The camp participant will await in an isolation area, with an employee, until pick-up. Any camp participant who is unable to attend camp due to illness or experiencing symptoms will be provided a pro-rated refund for any unattended days at camp.

Sites were selected in key geographical areas based on the following criteria:
- Availability of outdoor space
- Ability to have a minimum of two rooms available for use - one for programming and one for isolation
- Ability to have a dedicated bathroom for a group of 8 children

How many camp spots are available each week?
We are proposing 86 Summer Fun and Ultra Play camps, each with 8 children, so 688 spots, with the possibility of increasing the number of participants as the Province increases gathering limits. If gathering limits increase to 15, we could have 1,365 camp spots available.
What type of activities can be expected at the camp?
This low-ratio camp will allow small groups of children to enjoy fun and creative physically-distanced sports, games and crafts this summer, with activities held outdoors whenever possible.
Will it be offered in French as well?
French camps are available at select locations.
How will you proceed with the current registrations for summer camps?
All camp registrations that were planned to run from June 29 to August 28 have been cancelled, as the group size and ratios could not be met, and swimming, skating, outings and special guests are not permissible under the current Provincial restrictions. These restrictions made it impossible to offer summer camps as initially planned.
If you had a child registered for a camp between these dates, your program has already been cancelled, and a credit has been placed on your account. You can use it to register for a future program, or you can request a refund. Any unprocessed credit card payments will be cancelled.
What if the Province says that the City can’t run summer camps, but I’ve already registered for the new Camp Summer Fun?
Residents will receive a full refund for any camp that is not provided due to provincial prohibitions.
Why can’t refunds be processed automatically, same as for the spring session?
Clients who originally paid by debit card, cheque or cash will not be able to use that form of payment since only credit card and MC/VISA debit payments are accepted online. A credit on account will allow clients to access the funds they already had used. Clients will be able to self-serve to obtain a refund.
Can we give priority to those already registered in camps?
Although giving priority is feasible, several risks have been identified due to reduced number of camp spots per week to meet gathering limits and distancing measures. There are not enough camp spots to offer to all 4,219 participants who were originally registered for summer camps this year.
If we were to reach out manually to previously registered participants in order to offer them priority registration, there would be a delay while we awaited their response, which would then in turn delay the resumption of camps.
Considering this, cancelling all programs and allowing residents to re-register on a first-come, first-served basis is the best strategy for us to be able to refund clients and begin running summer camp programs as quickly as possible, and is the most impartial way forward. Additionally, this will allow residents to make alternate arrangements, should they be required, as soon as possible.
What will happen during a heat wave, or if there is a spike of COVID-19 cases?
Day camps may be cancelled without prior notice during heat waves, in the event of a staff shortage, or if there is a spike in COVID-19 cases. Last-minute cancellations will be communicated out to parents by telephone.
What will happen for those who have registered using fee subsidy (Ottawa Hand in Hand)?
The subsidy will be returned to these client accounts so that they can proceed with a registration online.
Will parents who register for multiple weeks of camp or who register more than one child be able to use scheduled payments?
Yes, scheduled payments will be available when registering online. The Pay Before You Play Policy will still apply, and clients will have to pay for the camps offered in July by July 1 and for those in August by August 1.
What should my child bring?
Lunch and snacks (nut free), sunscreen, cloth mask (recommended), refillable water bottle, hat and shoes appropriate for playing and running. Please don’t bring money, valuables or electronic devices.
Effective July 15, 2020, masks are required to be worn in enclosed public spaces at City of Ottawa facilities as per the Temporary Mandatory Mask By-law.
