Stage 1: Wading Pool Attendant

  • Qualifications:
    • Must be 15 years of age by June 1, 2019
    • Standard First Aid with CPR ‘C’ / AED
    • AODA
    • Recommended Bronze Cross or National Lifeguard (NL)

Stage 2: Aquatic Waterfront Lifeguard

  • Qualifications:
    • National Lifeguard (NL)
    • Standard First Aid with CPR ‘C’ / AED
    • Oxygen Therapy or Airway Management
    • AODA

Stage 3: Aquatic Lifeguard / Instructor

  • Qualifications:
    • National Lifeguard (NL)
    • Standard First Aid with CPR ‘C’ / AED
    • Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI)

Screening sessions

Wading Pool Attendant

Dates will be available January 2019.

Screening Items:

  • In person interview
  • Come prepared:
    • Review wading pool locations to determine preferred work locations
    • Bring Standard First Aid with CPR ‘C’ / AED, AODA, police record check

Aquatic Waterfront Lifeguard

Screening items:

  • 20 meters head-up approach to a non-swimmer with a 5 meters carry 
  • Deep water spinal turnover with 15 meters carry 
  • 20 meter approach, 20lbs object recover and carry 5 meters
  • Submerged recovery, removal and management of unconscious non-breathing victim
  • First aid (arterial bleed on inner forearm)
  • 200 meters swim under 3 minutes
  • 50 meters swim, submerged mannequin recovery, carry 25 meters in under 1min 30sec
  • 25 meters underwater swim 
  • Come prepared:
    • Bring bathing suit and towel
    • Goggles can be used for the timed swim
    • Bring your LSS ID and Standard First Aid with CPR ‘C’ / AED

Aquatic Lifeguard and Instructor

Screening items

  • Distressed victim rescue, 20 metre head up Approach, 5 metre carry
  • Spinal turnover and deep water carry
  • Submerged removal and management of a VSA victim
  • Conscious to unconscious choking infant 
  • 20 metre approach and object recovery
  • First aid (arterial bleed on inner forearm)
  • Come prepared:
    • Bring bathing suit and towel
    • Bring your LSS ID and Standard First Aid with CPR ‘C’ / AED

Path to become a lifeguard and swim instructor

  • Bronze Star *optional (10-12 years)
  • Bronze Medallion / Emergency First Aid with CPR ‘B’ (13 years)
  • Bronze Cross (14 years) and Standard First Aid with CPR ‘C’ / AED (14 years)
  • Airway Management  or Oxygen Therapy (O2)
  • Red Cross Water Safety Instructor – Part 1 (15 years)
  • Must have skill and stroke evaluation
  • Complete online modules and teaching experience
  • Red Cross Water Safety Instructor – Part 2 (15 years)
  • National Lifeguard (16 years)
  • Lifesaving Society Instructor (Desired)
