Claudie Larouche4 months agoEarlyON Playgroup Repository
As a parent, it was very complicated for me to figure out which EarlyON playgroup was happening on any given day. So I built a repository of all the EarlyON playgroups so that parents can simply visit the website and find out where the closest playgroups are happening when. You can filter by area, time of day, language and age range: https://claudielarouche.com/earlyon.html I used this as a datasource: https://ottawa.ca/en/family-and-social-services/childrens-services/earlyon

http://potsnap.ca/ https://www.facebook.com/PotSnap https://m.me/PotSnap https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/ottawa-pothole-reporting-fill-app-1.5073348 PotSnap is an Facebook Messenger based, automated pothole reporting tool. Potsnap is very simple to use. It only asks a few simple questions and then reports your pothole anonymously to the City of Ottawa. PotSnap is faster then any other means and hopes to be the tool of choice for Canada’s Pothole hunters. PotSnap is also a proof of concept of a first party tool, for the Universal Reporting System. It demonstrates the use of an independent API to service Endpoints with service requests, using the Open 311 framework provided by the City of Ottawa. The URT expands on the base provided by the City and provides richer feature set that focuses on reducing and eliminating common pain points for governance. 0 comment0craynorabout 1 year agoImproving collection of Ottawa's coyote data
The City currently collects data on coyote sightings using an online form (https://so311.serviceottawa.ca/selfserve/?reqId=2000190&lang=en). In its current iteration however, the form does not prompt the user for any details that will be useful to inform the 2023-planned development of a Coyote Management Plan. In reality, the fact that a Plan can be developed without yet having any of this information is a real concern. Modifications to the form to obtain specific data such as: - date, time, and duration of the interaction (is it mating or pupping season?) - type of interaction (i.e. sighting, encounter, incident, pet attack: Attended/Unattended, Human Attack, etc) - presence of attractants (garbage, intentional wildlife feeding, pet food) - if it involved a pet was the pet leashed? - human behaviour prior to and after the interaction and be worded carefully to avoid creating any potential bias (the form currently refers to a report of the "problem" and asks the user to explain the "issue").

2 comments1MBeaubienalmost 5 years agoParking near Fire Hydrants
It is very difficult to know even if you know how far to park from hydrants so people tend to park farther than they need to. Summer student marking where you put mousquito stuff in storm sewers could mark the hydrants as follows.. 1) paint an x on the pavement that shows clearly where one can't park. 2) have a box around it painted so drivers can see immediately this is not an available parking spot. .. not sure how datasets applies to this but this seems a nice initiative to add ideas!
2 comments0Matthew Darwinover 4 years agoUse OpenStreetMap base layer
The OpenStreetMap community in Ottawa is very active and works to quickly include updates from open.ottawa.ca into the base map in a timely fashion. The old CKAN based portal uses OSM base map. The new open.ottawa.ca should also use OSM base map. In the ESRI platform, the city can customize which OSM elements appear on the map using vector tiles. https://www.esri.com/arcgis-blog/products/arcgis-living-atlas/mapping/new-osm-vector-basemap/

The URL for construction projects is https://open.ottawa.ca/datasets/b2395e56baf148ee88eef9e20c43e12c_1/data. All those jumble of alpha-numeric characters are not intuitive. https://open.ottawa.ca/datasets/construction/data or similar would be much better

Ideas are reviewed on a quarterly basis by City departments. Approved ideas are adding to the department’s annual open data release plan. If a dataset cannot be released, the rationale will be posted on Engage Ottawa.

Gentrification typically means the loss of low income rentals and the growth of luxury rentals. Do we have data we can use to map this?
2 comments3MichelHalmost 2 years agoGTFS Info
I often access the GTFS (Google Transit) data which changes several times per year. Is there a way to get a notification when new data is posted? In another question, I downloaded a version today that did not include the June 2022 updates to schedules. Was that by design and when can we get the June data as these schedules to into effect this monrht.
0 comment0DanB65almost 4 years agoMandatory Yearly Bicycle License and Registration Fees
Just like anyone that has the privilege to own a vehicle it must be licensed, registered and insured which helps the economy for maintaining, repairing and creating roadways. Many cyclists ride without proper safety precautions, lights at night, no reflectors, darting in and out of traffic, not using proper HTA rules at stop signs, red lights, etc. Some cyclists will ride in the middle of the traffic lanes impeding vehicles stuck behind them. I understand that cycling is great exercise, causes no pollution and is a great way to get around but it's been my experience as a professional driver that I see more cyclists abusing their right of way even though the City has spent and is spending a lot of money which as a tax payer we all have to pay for. In order to lessen the tax increases for those of us that do not use or rarely use cycling to get around then why not input a yearly license and registration fee specifically for cyclists so they can enjoy and adhere to all the same HTA rules motorists are required to do. The fees collected would be used to help produce, maintain and repair bicycle lanes for all cyclists and possibly help ensure they follow and practice the same motor vehicle rules which I believe could help everyone on the roads.

3 comments7Kat456over 4 years agoAdd 'Water and Wastewater Networks' and 'Traffic Light' datasets
It would be helpful if the Water and Wastewater Networks data (as available https://ottawa.ca/en/planning-development-and-construction/developing-property/engineering-services#utility-mapping) was available for public download to provide a better understanding of these locations for underground infrasture interpretation. It would also be helpful to see where all of the City street lights and stop signs are located for better preliminary traffic control and construction planning purposes.
