Description

Marisa Gallemit’s work is informed by womanhood, motherhood and third culture shock. Her practice encompasses sculpture, assemblage, site-specific installation, storytelling and arts advocacy. Through an ongoing exploration of found objects and repurposed materials as well as a commitment to social practice, Gallemit’s work leans deeply into Buckminster Fuller’s query: “Now, how do we make this spaceship work?” This work is from the series Translating Twice: listening for the echo which was first exhibited in 2018 at Studio 66 in Ottawa. Identifying discarded objects as a contemporary renewable resource and contrasting them against woven objects made by Filipino craftspeople since pre-colonial times, she attempts to draw a direct line between her own methods of making and to those of her predecessors. The sculptures employ disparate materials to convey the tension that exists within ‘third culture’ experience. ‘Third culture’ is a term used by individuals who were raised in a culture other than that of their parents’. The use of traditional Filipino weaving materials alongside upcycled bicycle tubes gives a physical form to complicated ideas of cultural identity. Marisa Gallemit holds a Bachelor of Arts in Film Studies from Carleton University and a Film Production Certificate from New York Film Academy (New York).
