Project description
The City of Ottawa has initiated the preliminary and detail design for the O’Connor Phase 2 Bikeway project. The project includes the construction of a bi-directional, winter-maintainable, raised and separated cycling facility along the east side of O’Connor Street. The project limits are O’Connor Street between the south side of Laurier Avenue and the south approach to Wellington Street. A functional design study was completed in summer 2019.
As a major step towards creating a network of protected cycling facilities, O’Connor Street was identified as a Crosstown Bikeway in the 2013 Ottawa Cycling Plan update. The City recognized the need for a central north-south bikeway that would allow cyclists safe and comfortable access to and from the downtown core.
In 2015, Council approved the functional design for the entire length of the bikeway from Fifth Avenue to Wellington Street. The southern section of the bikeway, from Fifth Avenue to Laurier Avenue, was constructed in 2016. The northern section of the bikeway, from Laurier Avenue to Wellington Street is part of this project.
Project timing
- Preliminary design process: late winter 2020 – spring 2022
- Detailed design process: spring – early summer 2024
- Project tender close: summer 2024
- Notice of construction start: fall 2024
Project budget
Approved project funds to date are $2.7 million.
Public engagement
A public open house is expected prior to construction to present the final design drawings to the public. At that time, attendees will be able to review the design, ask questions and provide comment on the proposed works. More information on public engagement opportunities will be shared in the near future.
