Designing Neighbourhood Collector Streets

In 2019, Ottawa’s City Council approved the new 'Designing Neighbourhood Collector Streets' document in support of the Building Better and Smarter Suburbs initiative. These up-to date technical guidelines show designers how to balance space within typical street rights-of-way to provide enhanced space for walking and cycling, transit amenities, large trees, and low-impact stormwater management features - all while integrating low vehicle speed design. While the guide applies to new collector streets through new development, it also informs renewal projects. For new collector streets built through new development, these guidelines are used to help prepare plans submitted in support of development applications. It was developed in consultation with industry, utility, transportation and environmental stakeholders - the primary users of the document. This document will serve as a reference during the preparation of Community Design Plans and Secondary Plans, during the review of development applications, and when updating the City’s engineering design standards for urban collector streets.
