Beginning in August 2023, the City of Ottawa will begin construction work to construct a pedestrian crossover in your neighbourhood.

What: Pedestrian crossovers are designated areas that allow pedestrians to safely cross the road, where vehicles must yield to pedestrians when crossing. Pedestrian crossovers (PXOs) are identified by specific signs and pavement markings. In some cases, but not always, they may also have pedestrian activated flashing beacons. More information on PXOs is available at: https://ottawa.ca/en/parking-roads-and-travel/road-safety/community-safety#pedestrian-crossovers

Why: This work is required to improve mobility and safety for pedestrians.

When: This work is scheduled to begin in August 2023 and is anticipated to be complete by mid-September 2023.

Where: The PXO will be constructed on the north leg of the Cresthaven Drive/Baypointe Crescent intersection. Work will involve removal and replacement of sections of sidewalk along Baypointe Crescent and Cresthaven Drive, asphalt and landscaping reinstatement, and signs and pavement markings.

Who: The City of Ottawa has retained the contractor, Mopri Construction, to complete the work.

    Traffic, pedestrian and cycling impacts

To accommodate the proposed construction, temporary lane reductions will be required. Access to private properties, including pedestrian and cycling access, will be maintained throughout the construction period unless otherwise communicated.

    Parking

To allow work to proceed, on-street parking in the vicinity of the PXO may be prohibited during the construction period. If required, signs will be placed a minimum of 24 hours in advance, indicating the parking prohibition. Vehicles parked at these locations may be towed at the owner’s expense.

In the event that access to private driveways is temporarily restricted due to construction activities, the on-site inspector will provide a temporary On-Street Parking Permit (orange form) to authorize on-street parking within a few blocks of your residence.

    Construction disruptions

The contractor will take every precaution to minimize interruptions to the everyday life of your family and/or operation of your business, but, as you can appreciate, there may be some inconvenience during the course of the work, such as parking restrictions, noise, and odour. We would like to thank you for your patience and co-operation. For construction activity hours of work, the City of Ottawa follows provincial requirements and the City’s Noise By-law (2017-255). This allows construction activity to occur weekdays between 7 am and 10 pm. Project notice - Southmore Drive East traffic calming project (August 2023)

The City of Ottawa is in the detailed design phase of a traffic calming and pedestrian safety improvement project for Southmore Drive East.

What: The work involves 4 sets of speed cushions, a raised crosswalk at Walkley Road, modifications to on-street parking, pavement markings, and a new sidewalk segment from Garwood Avenue to Walkley Road.

More specifically, the new 2-metre-wide sidewalk segment is planned to be constructed in front of the location of the existing curb, so as not to reduce the green space in front of #2908 and #2918 Southmore Drive East. The current 11-metre-wide road will be narrowed to 9 metres to allow for the new sidewalk. On-street parking will be removed from one side of the street for this block.

Why: The purpose of this project is to improve safety for all road users, primarily by reducing vehicular speeds. The purpose of the sidewalk segment is to improve pedestrian safety and encourage active transportation.

Where: The entire project limits include Southmore Drive East from McCarthy Road to Walkley Road. The new sidewalk segment limits include Southmore Drive East from Garwood Avenue to Walkley Road.

When: Design is underway and is expected to be completed by late 2023. Construction is planned for 2024, subject to budget availability. Residents will be notified prior to construction commencement.

Who: The City of Ottawa has retained Novatech Engineering Consultants Ltd. to undertake the design of this project.

Impact on the right of way and adjacent private properties

The planned construction is within the City’s right of way but may result in some disruption to part of the private property directly adjacent to the work. The City will reinstate all sections of landscaping, driveways and walkways that are disturbed by construction. However, if you have plants or any other assets located within the City’s right of way that you want to preserve, we suggest that you may want to move them in preparation for the construction work.
