[11:57 AM] Tauvette, Claire Two children, Drake (left) and Mariam (right) are holding up achievement certificates in front of a poster board for the 9-1-1 Children's Awards. City of Ottawa Council Chambers are in the background.

Two local children, Mariam and Drake, were recognized for their bravery and quick action at today’s City Council meeting through the 9-1-1 Children’s Achievement Awards. Mayor Mark Sutcliffe together with Councillor Riley Brockington, Chair, Emergency Preparedness and Protective Services Committee, presented both children with awards for their courage.

The award, held in partnership with Bell, recognizes youth ages 12 and under who effectively used 9-1-1 in a crisis and helped others.

The City continues to educate residents of all ages on how and when to use the 9-1-1 service. The service should only be used for emergency situations. Misuse of the 9-1-1 system or accidental calls can result in delays in responding to real emergencies.

QUOTES

“I’m very proud to have met Mariam and Drake - they are the real heroes among us. It takes quick thinking and true bravery in emergency situations and these two are shining examples of how even the young among us can make a big difference.”

Mayor Mark Sutcliffe

“Learning how and when to use 9-1-1 and actually calling it in an emergency situation, are two different, but important steps. A big thank you to these two brave children and to our dedicated first responders who help save lives and respond to difficult situations every day.”

Councillor Riley Brockington, Chair of the Emergency Preparedness and Protective Services Committee
