Project overview

Project description

The City of Ottawa has initiated the preliminary design process for modifications to the intersection of Hunt Club Road and Riverside Drive. Specifically, the northbound approach to the intersection along Riverside Drive, and the northbound and southbound right-turn channels on Riverside Drive at the intersection, are to be reconstructed, together with cycling improvements. The objective is to improve intersection operations and safety for all users. Minor changes are expected to existing landscaping within the road right of ways.

The project limits have been increased to include additional roadway resurfacing for Riverside Drive from Hunt Club Road to approximately 300 metres south. The northbound and southbound right-turn channels now include raised crossings for pedestrians and cyclists.

Project timing

Design: February 2023 to January 2024
Construction start: spring 2024
Construction completion: fall 2024

Project budget

Approved project funds to date are $2,569,000.

Public engagement

An online public information session was held in September 2023 to present the design drawings to the public. At that time attendees were able to review the design, ask questions and provide comment on the proposed works. Other methods to involve community stakeholders will be implemented.

Accessibility

Accessibility is an important consideration for the City of Ottawa. The City makes every effort to provide access through and around construction sites. If you require a disability-related accommodation, please contact the project team listed below. Accessible formats and communication supports are available, upon request.

Construction (May 2024)

Beginning in spring 2024, the City of Ottawa will begin construction in your neighbourhood for the Hunt Club Road and Riverside Drive Intersection Modifications project. This project has been initiated to improve intersection safety and operations.

What: The proposed Hunt Club Road and Riverside Drive intersection modifications include:

  • Introduction of a new northbound cycle track, and bike boxes at all four corners of the Hunt Club Road at Riverside Drive intersection, to improve cycling level of service and safety.
  • Extension of the length of the northbound left-turn lane, through the Market Place intersection, to add capacity.
  • Introduction of a new median to channelize the northbound right-turn lane, to reduce undesirable merging movements.
  • Reconstruction of the northbound right-turn and southbound right-turn channels with active transportation crossings using protected smart channel principles.
  • Reconstruction of the existing guiderail at the northwest corner of the intersection, to respond to current standards.
  • Resurfacing along Riverside Drive from Hunt Club Road to the Market Place entrance.

Why: To improve intersection safety and operations.

Where: Riverside Drive from Hunt Club Road to 200 metres south of the Market Place entrance.

When: Construction is anticipated to commence in May 2024 and be completed by the end of October 2024. Weekend work and night work is expected. A noise by-law exemption will be in place for the night work.

Who: The City of Ottawa has retained the contractor, R.W. Tomlinson Limited, undertake the construction of this project.

Traffic management

The construction is within the City’s right of way. Residents can expect construction traffic and activity along Riverside Drive and at the intersection of Hunt Club Road and Riverside Drive. The road will remain open to traffic.

Lane reductions along Riverside Drive and Hunt Club Road are anticipated in the evenings and weekends.

Pedestrian and cyclist access along Riverside Drive and to local properties will be maintained at all times. During construction, minor detours may be required. OC Transpo routes and access to buses will be maintained.

On-street parking

As the various road reconstruction activities are in progress on your street, on-street parking may be restricted. In the event that access to your driveway will be impacted, you will receive 24-hours’ notice and provided with a Temporary On-Street Parking Permit (orange form) to permit on-street parking within two blocks of your residence. Residents with electric vehicles will need to find alternative charging arrangements when access is restricted. The use of extension cords within the public right of way is not permitted.

Should you have additional concerns about reduced access, such as business deliveries or accessibility requirements, please contact the project manager.

Impact on the right of way and adjacent private properties

The reconstruction is within the City’s right of way. Any private property impacts have been notified separately and Consent to Enters have been obtained for the work.

Construction disruptions

The contractor will take every precaution to minimize interruptions to the everyday life of your family and/or operation of your business. As you can appreciate, there may be some inconvenience during the course of the work, such as traffic delays, noise and dust. You may also feel vibrations due to heavy equipment operations. Vibrations from construction activities are quite common and rarely cause any problems. We would like to thank you for your patience and co-operation. For construction activity hours of work, the City of Ottawa follows provincial requirements and the City’s Noise By-law (2017-255).

Online engagement opportunity (September 2023)

The City of Ottawa remains committed to keeping the public informed of projects occurring in your neighbourhood and may use a variety of communication methods to update residents including but not limited to, mailed notices, ottawa.ca, in-person and online engagement opportunities.

The Hunt Club Road and Riverside Drive Intersection Modifications project held an online engagement opportunity and a virtual public meeting in September to provide residents with an update on this project and an opportunity to review information and provide comments.

The virtual public meeting was held via Zoom on Wednesday September 13, 2023, at 6:30 pm.
