Description

This sculpture by artist Michael Kinghorn reminds us of the dangerous conditions regularly faced by rescue workers. The open corner exposes a jumble of weathered gears, tilling blades, horseshoes and wagon wheels. The deteriorating structure is secured by stainless steel beams, representing the rescue work and support that firefighters offer. The majority of the materials used in the structure are recycled, including the found objects, which were largely sourced from old farms in the Gatineau Hills and neighbouring regions. The copper sign portrays the Urban Search and Rescue image, a caution warning to rescue teams entering a building. This sculpture is a monumental reminder of the risks taken and the impact made by fire services.

This project was made possible with the support and assistance of Ottawa Fire Services.
