The Transportation Committee today received a presentation from Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) about the federal government’s South Block redevelopment project, on Wellington Street across from Parliament Hill.

Construction on the project is expected to start in October and be completed by 2033. The work will impact mobility on Wellington and the surrounding streets. Impacts are anticipated to be minimal until July 2025, and will include sidewalk closures on the south side of Wellington Street, the north side of Sparks Street and the west side of Metcalfe Street. The closure of one traffic lane on Metcalfe Street is also planned.

Beyond 2025, work may require lane closures on Wellington Street. The Committee passed a motion asking the federal government to maintain one vehicular lane in each direction and one segregated cycling lane in each direction. If this is not possible, a report will be prepared for Committee and Council with a recommendation as to whether to issue a construction encroachment permit for the project.
