Project overview

Project description

The City of Ottawa is undertaking the design and construction of new infrastructure in the area of Delmar Drive and Playfair Drive. The project scope consists of:

  • Approximately 400 metres of concrete sidewalk along the east side of Delmar Drive from the existing sidewalk northeast of Beattie Avenue to Kilborn Avenue.
  • Approximately 330 metres of concrete sidewalk along the north side of Playfair Drive from the existing sidewalk fronting Playfair Park to Delmar Drive.
  • Renewal of storm and sanitary sewers on Delmar Drive between the intersections of Playfair Drive and Beattie Avenue, along with additional drainage improvements in the vicinity of the intersection of Delmar Drive and Playfair Drive.
  • Three new speed humps on Playfair Drive between Dunkirk Crescent (east) and Delmar Drive.

The new sidewalks will be within City right of way and their approximate layouts are demonstrated below.

Additionally, the approximate locations of the new speed humps on Playfair Drive are demonstrated in the figure below. Please note that there has been prior public consultation from the City's Neighborhood Traffic Calming program regarding the speed humps.

Project budget

Approved project funds to date are $518,000. Additional funding will be secured via the 2024 budget process for construction.

Public engagement

A public information session was held virtually over Zoom on Monday, April 15, 2024 from 6:30 to 7:30 pm, to present the design drawings to the public. During the session, attendees were able to review the design, ask questions and provide comment on the proposed works.

Online engagement opportunity (April 15 to 29, 2024)

The City of Ottawa remains committed to keeping the public informed of projects occurring in your neighbourhood and may use a variety of communication methods to update residents including but not limited to, mailed notices, ottawa.ca, in-person and online engagement opportunities.

The upcoming Delmar Drive and Playfair Drive project held a public information session to provide residents with information and an update on the project, which was held virtually over Zoom on Monday, April 15 at 6:30 pm.

What: The City of Ottawa is undertaking the design and construction of new infrastructure in the area of Delmar Drive and Playfair Drive. The project scope consists of:

  • Approximately 400 metres of concrete sidewalk within City right of way along the east side of Delmar Drive from the existing sidewalk northeast of Beattie Avenue to Kilborn Avenue.
  • Approximately 330 metres of concrete sidewalk within City right of way along the north side of Playfair Drive from the existing sidewalk fronting Playfair Park to Delmar Drive.
  • Renewal of storm and sanitary sewers on Delmar Drive between the intersections of Playfair Drive and Beattie Avenue, along with additional drainage improvements in the vicinity of the intersection of Delmar Drive and Playfair Drive.
  • Three new speed humps on Playfair Drive between Dunkirk Crescent (east) and Delmar Drive which were recently added to the scope of the overall project following consultation with the City's Neighborhood Traffic Calming program.

Why: The purpose of this project is to:

  • Construct new sidewalks to address critical missing links in the City’s active transportation networks to improve facilities for pedestrians.
  • Renew sewers and modify catch basins where required due to existing flooding concerns and to improve drainage.
  • Implement speed humps following a traffic calming review and public consultation that was complete by the City's Neighborhood Traffic Calming program.

Where: The overall project limits are:

  • Delmar Drive, from Kilborn Avenue to approximately 40 metres north of Beattie Avenue
  • Playfair Drive, from Delmar Drive to approximately 20 metres east of Dunkirk Avenue

When: Design is underway and expected to be completed by the end of spring 2024, with construction anticipated to start in summer 2024. Notices will be sent prior to construction.

Who: The City of Ottawa has retained the design consulting firm, CIMA+, to develop a design for the Delmar Drive and Playfair Drive project.
