Project overview

Project description

The City of Ottawa has initiated the design for upgrades to the Briar Ridge Pump Station that was originally built in 2002 and is located at 960 Klondike Road in North Kanata (Ward 4). It was designed to serve the Briar Ridge subdivision and surrounding drainage area of approximately 128 hectares.

This is an image of a map showing the location of the Briar Ridge pumping station at 960 Klondike Road in North Kanata within Ward 4.

Improvements are required for increased station capacity and to improve operation and reliability to meet current standards. With these upgrades the pump station is expected to increase its capacity to service the Kanata North Urban Expansion Area. The proposed upgrades include installing a new backup generator required for emergency situations, replacing existing two (2) pumps with three (3) new pumps, updating electrical and instrumentation to current standard requirements and other miscellaneous improvements.

Anticipated project timing:

Design assignment completion: fall 2021
Construction commencement: fall 2022
Construction completion: summer 2025

Project budget

Approved funding to date is $8.85 million.

Construction update (November 2022)

This notice is to advise that construction in your neighbourhood will be starting in fall 2022. This project is being conducted to increase the station’s pumping capacity, as well as to complete upgrades to the existing station.

What: This project will upgrade the existing sanitary pump station located in North Kanata (Ward 4) to increase the existing stations pumping capacity and improve its operation and reliability.

Improvements are required for increased station capacity (due to the growing North Kanata
area) and upgrades for reliability and resiliency as the current configuration requires additional redundancy and updates to current standard. The proposed upgrades include installing a new backup generator required for emergency situations, replacing two (2) existing pumps with three (3) new pumps (two duty and one standby/backup), updating electrical and instrumentation to current standard requirements and other miscellaneous improvements.

Why: Due to the increased demand for residential development and the age, condition and level of operation and maintenance required for the existing infrastructure, the City will be proceeding with the completion of the work required to increase capacity and improve the reliability/redundancy of this pump stations.

When: Construction is expected to be begin in November 2022 and completion is anticipated by December 31, 2023.

Where: Briar Ridge Sanitary Pumping Station located at 960 Klondike Road in Kanata North.  All proposed upgrades will be installed within the City right of way.

Who: The City of Ottawa has retained the Contractor, Doran Contractors Limited, to complete the work.

Traffic management

Lane reductions and alternating traffic can be expected during construction to accommodate the work. Access to private properties will be maintained throughout the construction period.  Access for pedestrians and cyclists will be maintained.

Construction disruptions

The Contractor will take every precaution to minimize interruptions to the everyday life of your family and/or operation of your business.  As you can appreciate, there may be some inconvenience during the course of the construction work, such as delays, noise and dust.  You may also feel vibrations due to heavy equipment operations.  Vibrations from construction activities are quite common and rarely cause any problems.  We would like to thank you for your patience and co-operation.
