Retail cannabis sales

The Province of Ontario has announced a framework to permit retail cannabis stores beginning in April 1, 2019. This is in addition to online sales of cannabis through the Ontario Cannabis Store website as of October 17, 2018.

Municipalities have until January 22, 2019 to decide whether to allow cannabis retail stores to operate within their borders.

Members of the public can express their views on whether cannabis retail stores should be allowed in Ottawa through an online survey, which will be available until Nov 7. Paper copies of the survey are also available at Client Service Centres.

The results of this consultation will guide Ottawa's City Council in its consideration of whether to allow cannabis retail stores to operate in Ottawa.

Smoke free by-laws

Once the Province finalizes regulations for smoking and vaping under the Smoke Free Ontario Act, 2017, the City of Ottawa will consider possible changes to smoking and vaping regulations within existing by-laws and whether new regulations are needed.

It is anticipated that public engagement opportunities on smoking and vaping regulations will occur in early 2019.

Commercial edible cannabis products

The Government of Canada has announced that it expects to enact rules for commercial edible cannabis products in 2019.

Once the federal and provincial rules are established, the City of Ottawa will consider any local rules that may be required.

Consultations for this issue will be announced later.
