The flags at Ottawa City Hall will be lowered to half-mast from sunrise to sunset on Monday, November 4 in honour of the late Andrew S. Haydon, who passed away on October 28, 2024.
A book of condolences will be available for residents to sign in the main lobby at Ottawa City Hall from noon on Thursday, October 31 to 5 pm on Monday, November 4.
Andrew S. Haydon was an accomplished engineer, politician and community leader. He was reeve of Nepean Township from 1970 to 1978 and regional chair of Ottawa-Carleton from 1978 to 1991. Notably, he was the first mayor of the City of Nepean when it incorporated on November 24, 1978; Ben Franklin assumed the title six days later.
Andrew S. Haydon championed many causes during his career. As reeve of Nepean Township, he oversaw the construction of the Nepean Sportsplex and the National Capital Equestrian Park. As regional chair of Ottawa-Carleton, he was instrumental in the creation of the Transitway, Ottawa City Hall (then the Regional Offices) and the Robert O. Pickard Environmental Centre.
Andrew Haydon Park on the Ottawa River and Andrew S. Haydon Hall, the council chambers at Ottawa City Hall, were named after him.
Andrew S. Haydon’s funeral service is scheduled for Monday, November 4.
