As part of the next phase of the Stage 2 LRT works, the City of Ottawa will begin the process to rebuild and reinstate the Byron Linear Park and to reconfigure Richmond Road using Complete Streets principles. Construction of this next phase of works on Richmond Road and Byron Avenue will begin Saturday, July 20 with completion expected by 2027. A two-kilometre stretch of Richmond Road and Byron Avenue between McEwen Avenue and Cleary Avenue will be affected. Access to and through the area will be maintained.
Construction will begin on Richmond Road and traffic will be detoured onto Byron Avenue. In detoured areas, westbound Richmond Road will remain open for local access when travelling to and from businesses and residences on the northside of Richmond Road. Area residents can expect work to occur on weekends and overnight. Slower than usual travel times should be expected and motorists, pedestrians and cyclists should follow local traffic and detour signage Bus stop locations along Richmond Road will be in new locations, you can find new locations on octranspo.com.
The work is part of the Stage 2 LRT Byron Linear Park / revitalizing Richmond Road project in conjunction with the O-Train Stage 2 West extension. The project will modernize and enhance the area, providing new pedestrian and cycling pathways, green spaces, benches and other amenities, transforming the area into a vibrant community hub. Also included in the project is the replacement of aging underground utilities such as water and sewer mains, final coverage of the LRT tunnel, installation of street lighting, traffic signals and signage, tree planting, and landscaping, as well as the reconfiguration of Richmond Road to improve its alignment. The project also applies the latest AODA standards to the project design. These improvements are designed to enhance connectivity and safety for pedestrians and cyclists within the area.
Following a number of years construction, the structural work on the tunnel under Byron Linear Park is wrapping up. The contractor is backfilling the tunnel in this area and is now working inside the tunnel to construct and install the required track and rail systems. The new light rail transit stations at Sherbourne and New Orchard are well underway and work on the stations is progressing above ground level.
