Project overview

Project description

The objective of this project is to provide formalized cycling facilities along York Street from Cumberland Street to east of Beausoleil Drive, and along Beausoleil Drive to Chapel Street.

Cycling facilities will generally be provided through pavement marking modifications with shared lanes, except that separate bike lanes will be provided westbound on York Street between King Edward Avenue and Cumberland Street, and West/Northbound along Beausoleil Drive.

Modifications to the King Edward Avenue and York Street signalized intersection will allow for eastbound and westbound cycling through the intersection. Intersection narrowing will be completed at the York Street and Nelson Street intersection, and Beausoleil Drive and Murray Street intersection which also improves accessibility at the existing Pedestrian Crossover (PXO). The existing cul-de-sac on Chapel Street just south of Beausoleil Drive will be reconstructed to provide a sidewalk on the west side of Chapel Street.

Staff will deliver a presentation at 6 pm outlining the project, followed by a question and answer period. Preliminary design drawings will be on display for your review and representatives from the City, the design consultant and the Ward Councillor’s office will be available following the presentation to answer questions and receive comments about the project.

The City of Ottawa invites you to review and provide comments on the draft design for this project that will be posted here after the event. Your feedback can be submitted via the online form, by email or by phone to the contacts below, between October 17 and October 31, 2024.

The following provides additional information about the project:

What: The project involves improvements to cycling facilities by formalizing routes through pavement markings and minor localized roadway modifications. The project also includes traffic calming measures including bulb-outs, speed humps, a raised intersection, and two intersection narrowings.

Why: The ByWard Market and Lowertown are currently not well connected for people cycling. This neighbourhood bikeway will create a more comfortable connection across King Edward Avenue and through Lowertown connecting people to important destinations both inside and outside of the community.

When: The project is currently in preliminary design. Construction is tentatively planned to start spring 2025 and be completed by fall 2025, pending budget approval.

Where: This project will take place on the following streets:

  • York Street between Cumberland Avenue and the east cul-de-sac,
  • Beausoleil Drive between York Street and Chapel Street,
  • The intersection of Murray Street and Beausoleil Drive.

Specific elements of the project include the following:

  • A new segregated bike lane on York Street westbound between King Edward Avenue and Cumberland Avenue,
  • A new bike lane along a portion of Beausoleil Drive between Chapel Street and York Street,
  • Pavement markings and signage indicating shared lanes throughout the project limits,
  • Intersection modifications at King Edward Avenue and York Street including signal modifications to permit eastbound and westbound cycling through the intersection,
  • Intersection narrowing at York and Nelson streets, and at Murray Street and Beausoleil Drive,
  • A raised intersection at York Street and Nelson Street,
  • Speed humps on portions of York Street,
  • Bulb-outs along Beausoleil Drive,
  • Modifications to Chapel Street south of Beausoleil Drive to add a sidewalk on the west side of the road.

Who: The engineering firm, Arcadis Professional Services (Canada) Inc., has been retained by the City of Ottawa to develop design drawings for this project.
